Re: V70 R awd problems after removing internal dumpvalve

Hehe... no, not really. The iPD kit is basically a sturdier diaphragm and three different springs to choose from.
When I switched to the piston style, though, that made a difference in sound for me at least. Sounded much more immediate, more like a BOV than the recirculation valve.

Re: V70 R awd problems after removing internal dumpvalve

Nice. Good find - they're getting rare. Okay, so the stock is definitely 0.8 bar, kicking up to about 0.9 when called for. 0.6 is far too low for an R in any case - that's below baseline for any HPT 850 or V70. I'd expect there to be at least 1 bar if it's been tuned by someone. Here's the thing. Yo...

Hey! Where in creation did you find a 98 R with 160k and one owner around here?! Not that I'm envious of that at all.. no sir...  Okay, so you can't put a BOV on these, so what you read is right. A BOV would dump metered air into the void, when it should be in the engine. So routing it ...

Yeah, what JimBee said. Check that - if it's making you run super rich, then that would account for the symptoms. It'd be good to check that the O2 sensor(s) are working correctly as well, on the heels of that. When my 850 had a milder version of those symptoms, it was the O2, not the MAF. Or a comb...

Just my 2 öre as it were, but could it be a headgasket issue? Grey smoke sounds a little ominous to me - I guess unburned fuel and water mixed. Could be just condensation, I suppose. The M4.3 isn't really any more difficult to tune. You need to start with a factory bin file, and then you can modify that incrementally. Switching to M4.4 gave me quite a few issues as well, so I can see how that might be daunting. I have some bin files for the M4.3, so send me a PM if you'd like to...

Go with a tuned ECU, it is super easy to swap them. Any turbo ECU will work, get one from 96-98 HPT or LPT. Non-turbo ECU won't work. The AC is not an issue on your 96, it sounds like they don't know what they are doing (red flag). Erikv11 knows what he's talking about. :) As he said, if whoever is...

So has anyone tried any of these plug-in chip upgrades for the ECU ? Seems like a simple way to upgrade ECU performance without having to replace it entirely. Just plugs into the ODB2 port. Hey! For a P0740, I'd say it's most likely a solenoid problem - those are at least the thingies that go most frequently. Luckily, they can be replaced from outside the transmission. You should get the car's codes scanned by something that reads Volvo specific codes, but you could also try to replace...

Been said before, but 80% of weird engine running issues with these are vacuum leaks. The hose/elbow on the passenger side of the intake manifold is a known culprit. It could still be your problem, I guess, but you’d have to find a way to put positive pressure in there instead, to test it.

What happens if you pressurize it? I’m not sure vacuum testing it tells you much - it’s supposed to “let go” when the manifold has vacuum instead of pressure, right? My CBV, with an iPD HD unit in it was definitely leaking around the edges though, and the piston style new one is very tight indeed. - S

Sounds like it’s wirth taking the time to check the wastegate setting. :) 0.4 mm sounds a little tight - is that on purpose? I gap mine to 0.6 mm - I don’t have your setup - I’m at about 0.9 bar - so I wouldn’t know. Low pressure gauges are a bit of a hassle to find, but they’re 8 USD on eBay, and i...

Hey! Have you done a compression check on it?
I don't like to be the one to bring it up, but do you have any way to clone a new ECU, and see what that does? Might not be very cost effective to do, but you seem to be exhausting most other paths.

Bypass Valve. You also have a bypass valve the opens when pressure is too high and bleeds off boost back into the intake, preturbo. You seem to be correct on most of it, except this one, I think... the CBV should send pressure to the intake manifold, not the intake pipe pre turbo. Whether it matter...

You need new upper shock mounts, and you need "reinforced" springs. Nivos use a reinforced shock mount that won't work with other stuff. If the Nivos are shot, be prepared for the car to ride a little higher on the "regular" springs than where the old Nivos would have kept it. You cannot - absolutel...

Fuel dump + Intake Air leaks. For example: Leaking Intake Gasket, fuel runs down from Fuel Rail passes the intake gasket, accumulates in the intake ports. Start it up and you got excess fuel and air. You shouldn’t need to run the car to read codes, though the ECU might not have time to set any. I dont know where I got that from- it seemed impossible. sorry There are gasoline engines with higher compression than that. Anyway, shouldn’t it be (Compression-1^1.2)pressure? And then you have to factor in temperature, etc. Even cam positions. So you’re never going to get a static number. - S

Re: Low Boost, TCV Adaptation 2000 V70R

Hang on a sec. if your TCV is going to 100% duty cycle, it’s reducing boost, not building it, right? IIRC, the lower the number in the tables, the more danger... :P Also, the stock Volvo TCV can’t be rated at 12 PSI. The T5R and R 850s run 14 psi, and the iPD tune for a 2000 R will jack it to 20. - S

You can repair clear coat, but it's usually not worth the effort. It's a lot of super fine grit sanding, edge refining and then masking, spraying, sanding repeat, polish, and then hope for the best. All the time hoping you don't cut into the color underneath. I only tried it once, on the little rect...

Strong smell is more of a healthy sign than anything else. The pads have to really dig in before they get hit enough to kick up a stink, so that probably indicates that yours are in good shape. It also takes time to cool down the discs and dissipate the fried pad material. Unless you feel the brakes...

What holds the oil filler spout in place? Pressed/threaded/glued?? It's a pressed on "sleeve" - don't know if it's glued or not, but the part was available to buy separately once upon a time... Re: What did you do to your Volvo today? (now Sticky!!)

Made my 226 HP T5 into a 250 HP T5-R with a bench ECU flashing rig I cobbled together.
Now suddenly dips up to 12 PSI on the boost gauge, which was a little startling (since I didn't think I could make it work :P ).

The ECU can fry coils, but it's super rare... You can NOT use the turbo ECU unmodified on an N/A car. It might run, but it'll expect there to be a turbo, it's mapped and set up way differently, so I doubt it would drive. You might be able to reflash a turbo ECU with an N/A map, but it's not uncompli...

You’re still a bar short. I’m not sure what kind of injectors you have in there, but your ECU is expecting a certain flow rate at a certain pressure. If the pressure is down, fuel flow is low, and then power will be down. For example, some models of x70 came with blue injectors, some with white. Tho...

Also, pressure should not disappear in 30 seconds - it should hold for at least 20 minutes or so. I’d say you need a new fuel pump check valve, and the pressure should be 3 bar from the pump. Changing the filter can’t hurt, but it’s probably not the cause of the dissipating pressure, at least.

Re: How to make my V70 XC powerful?

I second taking a look at those builds bmdubya mentions - the S60 “Dougy” at SS built (is building?) is insane, and there’s about a thousand pictures and a massive amount of info available. :D

Re: How to make my V70 XC powerful?

Except over here, Matthew... a Mustang GT would cost me upwards of 150k dollars for a 2017, and something like 50k+ for an older one in good shape with a V8. So we tinker with our aging turbobricks. :D

Re: How to make my V70 XC powerful?

Volvo auto transmissions are usually rated for something around 300 whp, but after that you need manual. IIRC, the manuals can handle upwards of 450, but don’t quote me on that. The stock engines can safely handle around the same as the auto transmissions, but upwards of around 310, you’ll need to s...

Re: 1996 Volvo 850 will not start in cold

I dont have any braided lines going to my turbo housing, but there’s only one port under and to the left of the turbo intake (at least on the stock 15G, and I assume on any TD04). It’s a vacuum line to the TCV - I think it’s the “red” line - someone correct me if I’m wrong. If that line is blocked o...

June; Like 93Regina says, 14.7 psi is "0". I.e. that's atmospheric pressure, the pressure we breath in normally. What your numbers seem to indicate is that either the ECU or the gauge isn't factoring in that 14.7 psi of atmospheric pressure, and simply adding it onto the numbers instead. Possibly in...

Have you checked all your hoses? Eliminating the ECT sensor, I still think it sounds like a vacuum leak. If you run into issues when it crosses into boost, pay special attention to the hose from compressor housing to TCV (port just below and to the left of the intake on the turbo). It’ll seriously m...

Re: Safety of S70 vs newer cars

What side curtain airbags on the S70 are you talking about? There are none :D The side bag built into the seat on 1999-2000 S/V70 extended to the lower part of the headrest area and was called a thorax airbag. Models before these years had only side body protection. Head protection was only afforde...

Re: 1996 Volvo 850 will not start in cold

Well... o2 sensor codes and a lot of misfires usually points to a vacuum leak somewhere. The ECT is a little confusing as well - was the first data stream from a warm engine? Have you had any work done on it, like PCV replacement, etc? Next time, unplug the MAF before starting, then try to start it....

Re: Opinions on accent paint for a platinum?

I think this could look really cool on that base color. I see greg's point about primary colors, but it does bring a certain 90's aesthetic to it that goes rather well with these cars. My dark blue one wouldn't take to it very well, but the platinum would.

You need to get your codes read. Then post them here, and we'll see what we see. Problems starting in cold weather can be anything from a bad engine temp sensor ("ECT") to engine grounds and coil/spark issues, and whatever's in between (MAF, O2 sensors, SAS, etc). Check first: - Codes. - Fuel? (Do y...

Yes, it is worth looking into. If your V70 ECT is telling the ECU 300 ohm, the ECU thinks the engine is at 80 degrees, even though the ECT is saying it's at 40. They're like a Swede and Norwegian talking to eachother. The Norwegian says something is "rolig". The Swede thinks something's funny, but t...

I should clarify - changing the heater core isn't hard. It's a little fiddly, and you have to pop back and forth between the driver and passenger side to remove 4 -5 torx screws, and clamp some heater hoses shut. Anyone can do it with a T25, a T15 and some patience. :)

Well, I'm as sure as I can get without actually being there. :D Squealing, noise, and no air coming out of the vents, is the blower motor. You need a new one. It's easy to replace, and if you want to go cheap, you can get the whole assembly for about $50 on eBay. Cheaper from a junkyard, I'm sure. A...

Re: 94' Volvo 855T P0131 after a new O2

Remember that the IC is "supposed" to leak air out through the bottom. If you have other leaks in it, they're usually quite easy to find. A smoke test is also pretty simple to set up if you're only testing the IC, but plug the hole in the bottom before you blow anything into it. You said you have a ...

I usually use vparts.se and ebay for the small stuff like fasteners, rear hatch repair kits and that sort of thing. :) The Swedish site might charge a bit more than viable for shipping, though. :)

So, you have 2 issues. 1: The heater core won't make noise, squeal or blow things through the vent. That's your fan and fan motor, which have seized. Replacing the fan motor (either with fan as an assembly, or just the motor if the fan is still OK) is not a big deal. Remove kick panel on passenger s...

Re: 2000 V70 NA Intake Air Temp Sensor? Not used on 20 V engine

Doesn’t matter how you twist it - “DOHC” doesn’t mean “10 valves”, and certainly doesn’t “designate” it. DOHC means Double OverHead Cams, and the 20v engines are also DOHC. If you have a 10v engine, you’ll have a spark plug cover that doesn’t say 20 Valves. Still... don’t trust a spark plug cover to...
