There are 2 fuel pumps, one in the tank (low pressure) and one underneath the car (high pressure). The LP pump lifts the fuel from the tank and feeds the HP pump. There is also a fuel reservoir next to the HP pump which is the other "cylinder" you can see. The noise your HP pump is making sounds ...

Mine had similar symptoms which started showing at first only on steep hills, slowly but surely it deteriorated over time, first by being very intermittant on the flat and only at highway speeds to becoming a regular pain. Again, when it was cold things were fine but with 30-35 degree ambient ...

Thanks Bill. It looks like Labour Day will be spent elbows deep in dashboard then.
As an aside, I like your part of the world, and used to spend a lot of time in the NE when I still lived in the UK. I lived up in the Peak District, so some similar scenenery.

Hope someone can help with this one. It's strange.
The air-con is bog standard i.e. just a big switch with on-off and a 4 speed fan. No temp control or anything fancy and the cold air flows out of the dashboard vents only.
