Re: Tale of 2 Volvos, Keep V70 or 940??
Thanks all for your inputs. Robert - great to see you online! As much as I like the style of the V70 (it has both the rear spoiler/fin; and T5 wheels), I'm agreeing with many of your comments. My son just needs a reliable safe car. And since he is very unlikely to do his own maintenance the 940 is t...

Re: Tale of 2 Volvos, Keep V70 or 940??
actually I haven't found the turbos to be that much more maintenance than the NA 240 we used to have. Also both of the current cars have turbos, so I'm looking to keep one & sell the other. The 940T has been solid on reliability. The only times it wouldn't run were an ignition amplifier (died on...

Tale of 2 Volvos, Keep V70 or 940??
I have a 98' V70 GLT and a 95' 940T with my son in Las Cruces, NM. I live in the Seattle area. Which would you keep? See my other post "In the midst of a road trip..." about my Planes Trains & Volvos trip before Christmas. V70 GLT, 98', ~ 184 K miles: possible pinhole leak in head gask...

Re: In the midst of road trip - risky to jumper radiator fan On??
Abscate - that is something to consider. Have to admit I do like the V70 GLT. I had an S70 GLT same model year - 98' That was before electronic throttle, has normal oil filter & no variable valve timing. Unfortunately we need the money to help with his tuition. I'll start another post about both...

Re: In the midst of road trip - risky to jumper radiator fan On??
All - sorry I dropped this thread. Here is the Reader's Digest version: I did replace the fan relay at the dealer in Sacramento. Fan still did not seem to work so continued with the jumper wire. Got most of the way through LA to Pomona, CA. Stopped for gas just before 3:00 and looked under the hood ...

Re: In the midst of road trip - risky to jumper radiator fan On??
Well - turns out the threads on the cap were stripped, expansion tank as well! Replaced both with parts from dealers (Chico, CA and near Sacramento). Engine still heats up so I jumpered the fan but may have been too late, at the last stop I saw coolant leaking underneath - likely the pump gasket. I'...

Re: In the midst of road trip - risky to jumper radiator fan On??
Yes - max I have seen is 211F, just now! So this has become more critical - stopped to take a few pictures, driving around Red Bluff,CA and the temp went way up, again coolant coming out! I'm now thinking there is a more serious issue like an obstruction in the block somewhere or???? Recent work inc...

Re: In the midst of road trip - risky to jumper radiator fan On??
Thanks for the quick response. Last night was cold, maybe mid 40. I have a ScanGuage hooked up to give me realtime coolant temps. On some of the hills it climbed to 198F. Then kept climbing to 204F when I shut it off, that's when I realized the fan wasn't working. Glad to know highway speeds make th...

In the midst of road trip - risky to jumper radiator fan On??
I'm literally 1/3 the way from Seattle area to southern New Mexico. Driving son's 98' V70 GLT that I've been fixing over the summer. Last night stopping for gas when I popped the hood a good amount of pressurized coolant was leaking from under the expansion tank cap. I tightened the cap a little but...

Re: Scared to loosen 18 year old thermostat bolts!
My favorite penetrating oil is PB Blaster. You can spray that on the bolts & let it seep in for 10 minutes or so. You can also do it a couple of times over a day to be sure. Good job with trying it out at the junkyard. I think some have replace these bolts with a hex head fastener, I'm not famil...
