It will keep getting worse if you let it go and key will no longer come out at all. happened to mine

(SCU) ignition switch was the problem!! Plastic part failure causing a solonoid to not disengage key. This S40 only has 60K on it and I've spent more on repairs (not maint.) than my last two Toyotas or 3 Hondas put together. Found out control arms starting to leak and a motor mount going as well now...

I can't shift it unless I push it in but I will try to pull it out or slap it around a little anyway that might work. It's in Az and a garage so cold not a problem. Park,neutral nothing seems to work and its so bad now I have to disconnect battery to cut power.Thank you for the input

Thanks Bill: Tried that as well --this is one of those plastic keys with fob on it and switch is on the dash. totaly electronic. I'm thinking it's the switch. Hoping someone had similar problem so I'm more informed before I go to the only dealer in town.

I have a 2005 s40 and key will not turn all the way off and we can't get it out of the switch without many tries then it will click loudly and finally release. Getting worse! anyone else had this problem and is it the switch or a related part. Batt new no starting problem remote battery good.
