Post by spuddnutt »

I have a 2005 s40 and key will not turn all the way off and we can't get it out of the switch without many tries then it will click loudly and finally release. Getting worse! anyone else had this problem and is it the switch or a related part. Batt new no starting problem remote battery good.
thanks

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

The least lubricated lock on any car is the ignition lock. You may just havesomething sticking inside. Spray a little silicone based lubricant on the key and move it in and out of the lock a few times then try it.

Thanks Bill: Tried that as well --this is one of those plastic keys with fob on it and switch is on the dash. totaly electronic. I'm thinking it's the switch. Hoping someone had similar problem so I'm more informed before I go to the only dealer in town.

Is the shifter button all the way out?

When it's cold outside, the shifter button on the grab handle on my car sticks and won't release the key. A good whack (or pulling the button out) will release it.

I can't shift it unless I push it in but I will try to pull it out or slap it around a little anyway that might work. It's in Az and a garage so cold not a problem. Park, neutral nothing seems to work and its so bad now I have to disconnect battery to cut power.Thank you for the input

(SCU) ignition switch was the problem!! Plastic part failure causing a solonoid to not disengage key. This S40 only has 60K on it and I've spent more on repairs (not maint.) than my last two Toyotas or 3 Hondas put together. Found out control arms starting to leak and a motor mount going as well now. Not a well built car at all.

I've been looking to buy a new(er) car, and I looked at a 2004(1/2) S40 and a 2007 Honda Accord and VW Jetta. The S40 was already showing signs of age with some of the electronics. The owner said that you had to fiddle with the locks to get things like the sunroof and radio to work. I have no idea how the two are connected, but that seems like a huge problem to deal with in the future if it's tied to other things. The VW and the Honda showed absolutely no signs of wear and tear at ~35,000 miles each.

The newer Volvos are just full of electrical issues (moreso than mine) and technology too advanced for their time I think. I don't know if I will own one of the newer models.

My wife constantly complains about the poor radio and you are right about showing wear and tear I'm not impressed with fit and finish and door seals are coming loose the material on the center comp. is cracking. The resivoir for windshield washer is a two part affair and is leaking at the neck?? another bad design designed to be a problem. I'm not impressed with this car at all and its very difficult to get info to work on it myself and most shops won't touch it because they can't find info on it . Vadis not available anymore. I'm told VW the same so repair and maint costs WILL be higher.Good luck
