My most recent experience with the blown head gasket symtom turned out to be the death nell. I had the 1999 V 70 and was truly impressed with it, that 5 cyl turbo would get right with the program when you wanted it but........... boy did that car cost money to keep alive every month after 100K it ...

Its been several years I will have to check my repair log ( yes I am one those guys ) A quick check if you haven't done so already is to jump out the freon low temp switch (near firewall pasagers side right as it passes into thru the firewall )monentarily if the compressor kicks on you ...

This answer might be orthogonal to your question but when my 740A/C started being intermittent I found that it was the switch . I stole the antenna switch that I always thought redundant anyway,tied the antenna power leads together,it will go down when you shut the car down or turn off ...
