Ok, it was the ball joint and it is the removeable type. Thanks for all the help.

Still wondering if the axle is held in the trans by a Circlip or not, but it may be a moot point once the ball joint is repaired..

I agree with the Sylvania SilverStars, they dont seem to last me long but I still buy them for the amount of light they produce. I havent tried the SilverStars Ultras yet, but they may have better filaments in them and last longer.

I guess what I should have asked was, should there be 1'' of play ( I can see the axle moving that much) but only on the left side. The hub was replaced (Volvo) a yr ago but agree that the ball joint could be bad.

basically you need to raise the vehicle up and check your suspension over. How long has it been since its had a alignment ?
As far as hard start problem.. it could be your fuel pump relay ( common problem ) or the fuel pump is getting hot and failing on you. If i remember correctly ...

I Hate That Sound !!!...but "Usually" a bad cv joint makes a clicking sound, and it usually happens on turns ! Makes me wonder, hmmmm...I would say it was the HUB and not the cv unit, think of it as replacing your wheel bearings with a HUB replacement.
You will know which one is bad when you turn ...

Did you vacuum the system and, did it hold vacuum for an hr or so after ?
