I do know Volvo has issued a TSB extending the airbag service life to at least 15 years (I think it may have been extended further to "life of the car"). While there is a label on the door indicating service is needed at 10 years, the TSB stipulates the only service to be to replace the sticker.

This is a very common problem with 850s. The normal route is to replace the cable that runs from the motor/gear assembly on one side of the seat to the gear assembly on the other side of the seat. The motor is where the seat back comes down and attaches to the seat. Check out Bay 13 for more info ...

Hmm, maybe I shouldn't have dismissed ABS so quickly. Any suggestions on I can check to see if that's the problem? Would it require any kind of advanced equipment, or is it as simple as reading a code?
