Thank you everyone very much! To summarize, I take off the side marker lights to get to the outside headlight assembly bolts, then remove the grill to get to the inside headlight assembly bolts. I will check it out tomorrow during the daylight.

OK thank you, that makes sense, I can follow that, as I have replaced the side marker lights before. That would seem to make available the outside bolts for the headlight frame/unit/assembly. Are there bolts on the grill side, and if so how do I get to those?

On my 1994 940 Turbo Wagon with similar symptoms the problem was with the fuel relay, located behind the ash tray. It cost around $50 for a new one from the dealer and solved the problem. Maybe try one from a junkyard before paying for the new dealer part?
