You won't always here metal to metal. Why in the world would you turn the crank without the timing belt on? It absolutely will hit the valves if you do that.

I had a Honda that did the same with a cracked manifold. The temperature variance causes contraction and expansion sometimes letting it leak and other times it sounded perfect.

Had the fuel filter been done recently?

850 turbo wagon and you're ditching it over a starter? You just need more leverage.

Did you check to make sure the heat shield has all its bolts and they are tight.

That said it does sound like a leaky exhaust manifold whether it's cracked it just loose.

I wouldnt read to deep into the clean title in your state. Seller most likely would have hidden the previous wreck thing if they were being deceitful. The car looks very clean and low miles however I would check the miles on the ECM as it seems every 850 I've come across has had a busted odometer at...

^ exactly! I had the same wheezing from the intake area of the engine. I wish I had posted up a question earlier but I figured everyone would jump to the conclusion of bad timing, which obviously isn't the case. This is something that is obviously not uncommon with these 850's the more I ask around ...
