yes i tried to start it in neutral but still nothing

I have a 1987 volvo 740 gle the car will not crank over.I replaced the battery and checked all the cables.I can jump start the car by using a wire from the battery to the solenoid need solution to my delema.I tried starting it in neutral also.No idiot lights when the car is running
