I have a intermittent check engine light that is giving me a catalytic converter code of catalyst efficiency below threshold, I get no rotten egg smell the light is intermittent. the car has 228k, can the converter just be worn out? any help please!

I have a 2005 s40 can anyone tell me, on fwd vehicles are the transmission and differential one in the same and share the same fluid, or are they independent with atf in one a gear oil in the other? this is the first fwd vehicle i have owned and wondered if they would require separate maintenance?

Would it be a good idea to add a inline filter? if I have those numbers in my vin.
