Transmission/differential?

I have a 2005 s40 can anyone tell me, on fwd vehicles are the transmission and differential one in the same and share the same fluid, or are they independent with atf in one a gear oil in the other? this is the first fwd vehicle i have owned and wondered if they would require separate maintenance?

That transaxle uses the same fluid for diff and transmission.

It does require auto trans fluid that is JWS3309 spec which is also the same as Toyota T-IV.

Sometimes the fluid may list Volvo 1161540 which is the JWS3309 equivalent.
