Will a failed etm cause the car to not start/run?

I get that the yellow sticker doesn't fix anything. It was a 2012 year stick ... while that brings some assurance that still doesn't guarantee it works.

My primary question is, would the difference in the transmissions make the etm unusable even with a software reload if the etm was, indeed fully ...

OK ... etm is on the fritz. Light was on for a few months but it drove fine. Finally on a trip it does (murphy's law is without exception). I got it home and replaced the etm with a used yellow sticker from a V70 turbo from the same year.
