OK ... etm is on the fritz. Light was on for a few months but it drove fine. Finally on a trip it does (murphy's law is without exception). I got it home and replaced the etm with a used yellow sticker from a V70 turbo from the same year.
After installation the car ran briefly with a slightly elevated idle speed then died and would not start again. The etm light immediately came on while running. So I thought to myself, "Self, you need the dealer to reprogram the etm." After celebrating with a beer and patting myself on the back I towed it to the dealer who reprogrammed the ETM ($70 for software, $70 for "labor").
Once reprogrammed, still same result. The car will now not start. Here's the question...
Since my car is AWD (not many AWD s70's out there) and the ETM I purchased is from a FWD turbo car, is the ETM I purchased worthless even with a software reload? Is the ETM incompatible, the dealer didn't load the software I actually needed, or more likely I got a bum ETM off of eBay? I have never been able to find out whether the same transmission (AWD for AWD, FWD for FWD) is required.

FWD or AWD makes no difference.
Just because it has a yellow sticker
doesn't mean that it's a good one.
The original design is inherently flawed.
The only real fix is an upgrade to a
non-contact reman like the XeMODex.
Or you can upgrade the sensor yourself.

I get that the yellow sticker doesn't fix anything. It was a 2012 year stick ... while that brings some assurance that still doesn't guarantee it works.
My primary question is, would the difference in the transmissions make the etm unusable even with a software reload if the etm was, indeed fully functional?

I thought it would usually start and run in limp mode, but for a late P80 I think bad software might be a no-start. When you key on, does the ETM whine for 8 seconds, then stop?

The ETM must make noise. If there is no noise there is no pedal operation.Abneya wrote:Will a failed etm cause the car to not start/run?
With intercooler pipe removed have a 2nd person place key in Pos II and quickly operate the pedal (you have around 8 seconds to do this until it shuts off and stops responding to pedal operation)
From under the car you should see the pedal flap move during this time. You can use a mirror if you can manage it.
After the first check as above snake your hand into the butterfly and check the flap for full operation from fully closed to fully open. Does it bind or catch?
If it binds in the fully closed position the car will not start. If it binds elsewhere it may strart but run quite badly.
Remember it's only purpose is to let air in the engine to reach ideal 14:1 ratio. It can't kill spark or stop fuel from reaching cylinders.
Abscate's question is relating to the 8 second whining noise which indicates correct firmware. If ETM hasn't been programmed correctly it will whine indefinitely with key in Pos II (engine off)

This may or may not help you but I figured I'd post it just in case. If the dealer reprogrammed the ETM it should work as long as the Donor car was a Turbo and yours is as well (vice versa for NA). I went through quite a bit trying to prolong the ETM on my 99 S70 AWD

If ETM part number is the same dealer won't have any trouble erasing and rewriting the firmware on your ETM regardless of previous aspiration or model it was fitted to. I know because I program them.
They usually check the firmware level after programming through Vida Diagnostics however who knows what they did on the day.
