Could i simply get rid of the relay and make overdrive permently on? By hooking the 2 wires together

It is not the button, the over drive off light stays on and it never engages. Is there a simpel thing i could do like cross 2 wires and just have over drive on permenately? What is useully the problem when overdrive will not engage.

When I turn the key it makes no noise at all. I can jump a wire from the battery to the starter and it will start right up, but i cannot find any faults in the wireing leading to the starter. My gas gauge dose not work, DOse any one know a common reason for this. Or any suggestions on how to fix it?

When my engine is idleing I can hear a faint high speed ticking, the ticking speeds up at higher rpms. I can olny hear the ticking from the engine compartment not inside.
