What is the interval for Volvo OEM plugs on a turbo LPT. I believe they are made by Bosch and the model is FR7DPP, is this correct? That would make them Platnium which I find keep their gap much better than Copper plugs. Thanks

How is it failing? I know the common failure point, is the solder joint.

Open one up and have a look at the coil, activate it with 12V, even a 9V batter, does the spring move. If it does test the continuity and try to see if you can peak a look at the contacts.

Ok I did some more analysis. When you have the ventilation on recirc you don’t smell anything. I did the glove test and it failed, it didn’t blow the glove fast but it did inflate it. When I pulled the dipstick I saw smoke. When the pcv system fails does it get into the vent? The smell is smells lik...

Gas smell through vents

Hello all. After my wife had her front drivers fender hit, she started to notice a gas smell through the ventilation system. When the car is moving you don't notice it, I guess because the fresh air is getting to the intake, but you notice it when you are at a stop. I removed the fender and I don't ...

You can use after market rivets too. Harbor freight sells substandard chinesium ones. Amazon has some at good prices. Haha, BMW is the best-kept secret. Personally, I like BMW better b/c it seems to run well and does not have the little problems in Volvo. BMW is more fun to drive. Why is the head gasket leaking? That’s the sign of a bad head job usually, they rarely fail.
I would address that before tossing good money after bad. I would also remove the aftermarket alarm. You’ve done a lot of tune up work so I would address the main issue and not drive it with a blown gasket

Re: Engine Sludge: Any Updated Fix?

The old timers used to use Kerosene, Diesel or Auto Trans fluid, I would choose the auto trans fluid over the other two as it is actually an oil. As for any detergent, the key is to only idle the car, not drive it. You may want to consider using Rotella Shell oil which has very good detergents in it...

To update the post, I am impressed with the Behr thermostat, it doesn't have the welded tabs like teh Wahler option. It is rated for 92C comapred to 90C which is better because I notice the car was taking a while to warm up with the Wahler even though it looked fine. The rubber seal on the Behr was ...

Re: Thermostat Brands

I have used all of them. For your Volvo 850... - Vernet is French, it is OK but the rubber gasket crumbled after 5y. - Behr is OK. - Wahler is OEM. It should last 80K-100K. Thanks, probably why the Behr is $19, and the Vernet is $10. I will try the Behr. The Wahler seems to last 120,000km or so.

Squirt some WD-40 in your TCV, it could be getting lazy, but if you can change it. Check all your vacuum lines, they tend to degrade with time. Great DIY. This is for the 2001-2003 models fitted with this rack and the thinner and not rust proofed lines. These will rust indeed in the salt belt area. New lines from the dealer are about US$150 But better jack the car on jack stands and spray from all angles lots of rust proof pain before this...

That is interesting both the V8 and 6 cylinder share the same transmission. If it survives in the V8 I agree it should be okay in the 6. Looks like you should avoid the early 2007 models.

What trans was used in the 3.2L? Was it reliable? TF80-SC, made by Aisin AW. Same manufacturer of the AW 55-50SN transmission used on the earlier 5 cyl Volvos. I believe the solenoids in the AW55-50 were upgraded somewhere in the mid-2006. They were prone to getting stuck in 2001-mid2006 when the fluid wasn't changed. After mid 2006 the solenoids work better when the fluid is never changed. About the same moment the AWD bevel gear was also upgraded and sh...

Get a flex head 3/8" high tooth count (72 tooth minimum) and you will greatly improve the time it takes to complete this task.
I wish I would have knew early how much this helps jobs in the wheel well.

All good options from lowest to highest budget: Pittsburgh, Gear Wrench, Armstrong, Snap On

Come to Toronto area, people give away old cars and with the Volvos you don't have to worry about rust. People lease or buy new cars here so you can get a S70 T5 with less than 300,000km (186,000 miles) for around $1000.
