Re: 1999 V70 XC What kind of mpg do you guys get?
I have a 1999 V70r AWD. It shares almost all engine/tranny/drive-system attributes with the XC. It sits lower to the ground, but also should logically burn more gas as the HP turbo pumps more air into the engine. Anyway. Here are my numbers: Town- Driving like an ass 16.1mpg, normal person 18-19mpg ...

Re: 1999 V70R Mystery Steering Vibration Issue
The rims I am running were very easy to find on craigslist for about $300US. But I do live in a very large (7million) metro area so its pretty easy to find everything... They are original Volvo Arakkis (spelling?) from an s80 and look great! Apparently some people have brake line clearance issues wi...

Re: 1999 V70R Mystery Steering Vibration Issue
Hey guys. After replacing everything I could think of and working with the local Volvo guys to fix this issue (post dust-up with a curb) I have a solution! It is ridiculous... the head of the Golden Gate Volvo club is the one who finally solved it. So, as mentioned above the rims are perfect, the ti...

Re: 1999 V70R Mystery Steering Vibration Issue
Thanks so much Niel. Good stuff all around. I have replaced the bevel gear and with a decent used one that had was full of clean gear oil and had no play of any kind when the shop installed it less than 500 miles ago. They are a volvo's only outfit in the SF Bay Area and seem to know whats up... I w...

Re: 1998 V70 AWD clunking noise
I had a similar issue on my 1999 AWD R... mine also went away when I removed the prop shaft and drove it FWD mode. I finally replaced the angle gear with a used unit from a local junk yard that allows you to return transfer cases if they don't work once installed ($250). I of course replaced its flu...

1999 V70R Mystery Steering Vibration Issue
Hi guys. I'm experiencing major mechanical frustration with my beautiful 143k, 1999 Laser Blue v70R. The car vibrates very badly, seemingly focused on the front right side. I bought the car one year ago with the intention of replacing everything needed and making it my daily driver/freeway racer. I ...

Re: 1999 V70R AWD Horrid Rear Suspension/Drivetrain Clunk
OK Gents, drumroll... it was the angle/bevel gear. Here is the breakdown of what happened. 1) When I dropped the bevel gear out of the car, the connector sleeve to the transmission was completely fine. The angle/bevel gear appeared to be working fine as well. When I spun the connector sleeve the out...

Re: 1999 V70R AWD Horrid Rear Suspension/Drivetrain Clunk
I'm still in the middle of my attempt to fix this. But... I had a similar sound happening as my angle gear started to go bad. It sounded like a brake pad rubbing. Very scratchy and light. Since I removed the prop shaft (to roll FWD only for the moment) the sound disappeared completely. Give that a t...

Re: 1999 V70R AWD Horrid Rear Suspension/Drivetrain Clunk
So, the tires and wheels are brand new and all of the same size. Volvo original rims. I did recently have to drive it just a little ways at non-highway speeds with the spare on after a flat. So that may have caused the issue. Damn! As I mention in the original post the rear wheels are not getting po...

Re: 1999 V70R AWD Horrid Rear Suspension/Drivetrain Clunk
So. I removed the prop shaft to determine whether the clunk of death was drivetrain (and rear-end related) It turns out that it is. Without the prop-shaft sending power the rear wheels the chunk is gone. I gave in and went to my great local Volvo Guys (specialists, not dealer) and they say that my b...
