The pulsation and grinding noises are consistent with metal to metal contact with the brakes. I'd have a good hard look at the calipers and rotors. I'll bet you'll find the pads have worn down into the backing material. If so, you will probably have to spring for new rotors, as well as the pads ...

If they quoted you $2300 for everything, and then said the wheel bearings were $500 a wheel, I'd tell them no thanks on the wheel bearings, but please do the struts, springs, sway bar links and rear springs for the $300 left on the original estimate.
Something tells me that they won't go for it.

Just a quick update. I went ahead and installed the junkyard tranny/OD as received. The removed unit is a P type, as expected. No problems with the OD at all, so far.
As for the trans, it's got some synchro issues and some very sloppy internal linkage, but I can deal with it for now. I just wish ...

Haven't had time to mess with it yet. Changing trannies on Thursday, so will try to get to it then.

Went to the dealer today, and they weren't much help. The catalogue shows a J-P type for later 740's, but no straight J type.
I'm swapping the trans on Thursday, so I can swap my existing OD with the J type if I have to. It''ll be interesting to see what's in there now.
