All back together and returned to my buddy. It runs great and the trans seemed to be fine as well. I ended up adding atf from the bottom with a pump. Thanks to everyone for all the help and advice. It's back to Bimmerland for me.

Drained the trans, it's filthy dirty. The fluid is almost black. I started pulling the trans. Removed the harness and starter, air piping, bottom side mud shield, left side wheel.
