Check trans fluid with car running at idle on level surface.

I was wrong this is a t5 car as stated above. Today I will reinstall the airbox and check the fluid level. Thank you goes to JDS60R for the pdf's above.
I didn't lose any trans fluid that I can remember. I left the right side axle shaft pretty much where it was except for unbolting the bearing support from the block. The car was pretty clean underneath, no real oil leaks to speak of except from the axle shaft seal and it was just a small amount of what I like to call "oil sweat" around the seal. No trails or serious mess, very slight, however a leak is a leak and it will lead to a low fluid level no matter the severity.

Reinstalled airbox and started engine to check fluid level. It is full, actually overfull. It's at the full hot mark with the engine cold. I put it in gear and no response, not even a little. I may be replacing the trans now. Bad timing too, my wife just called and told me here wagon is messed up. I don't have any idea what's wrong with that yet.

Drained the trans, it's filthy dirty. The fluid is almost black. I started pulling the trans. Removed the harness and starter, air piping, bottom side mud shield, left side wheel. It appears that I have to remove the entire front subframe with the engine and all. I'll get pics tomorrow and post some stuff up. I can't believe the transmission went on the test drive. I checked the converter bolts, they are all there.
After looking around the car needs front brakes too. Can someone verify that I have to pull front subframe to remove trans or should I just pull the motor again. It really wasn't that hard to do the first time so the second time around it would go pretty quick.

This is pretty sad an eye opener... A car that was bought new and serviced at dealer has engine failure after dealer oil change and now tranny goes bad for lack of service ...

You really can't clear all the ABS stuff with both assemblies attached to each other. Pulling the subframe is an option or motor first then trans next. Personally I would pull motor then trans.

Hello everyone, it's been a while since I've been here. Progress with the s60 has been made. I also fixed my wife's car and got both of my vehicles tagged, fixed my fathers car, acquired a very nice 88 k5 blazer, and probably a few other things as well. The Volvo is all back together with a used trans that had 150K on it. My buddy couldn't swallow the cost of a new trans and it took him a while to accept that his trans had just gone out, and he was going to have to dump more money into this vehicle. $1500 later a used trans was delivered to my shop and I brought it home. Everything is all back together and I'm currently researching transmission filling methods and approximate volume of fluid needed to fill a drained trans. I do not know if the converter was empty because it was installed on trans and held in place with a bracket, I did not remove it from the trans.
So far I have four quarts in it, which I filled from above when I had the air box, and the cooled charge air pipe out. I started it up and put it in gear and it sucked that fluid up and appears to need more . I have on the lift running with the air piping and filter housing back in place. The problem is accessing the fill tube with all that stuff in place. I'm trying to do it from the bottom but filling it will be a challenge. I need a small pump and hose to reach the fill tube.
