Re: 1998 S70 T5M 240k the Road to Stage 0

So, thought I was chasing an induction leak, but this is weird. Getting intermittent rough idle. Worse with A/C on, but I think that's more to do with the extra load on the engine. Seems to pop up after long drives at moderate to low speeds, after idling for more than a few minutes, and after modera...

1999 S70 AWD for Parts, Wheeling, WV

Wrecked the car last fall, and it's been sitting on a buddy's property near Wheeling, WV ever since. He just called and said I need to get a move on getting rid of it. Car hit an embankment in the front, which took out the bottom of the bumper, rad sandwich, and rad support. All of the coolant and a...

Went on a back road grande tour of sorts today for nearly 4 hours and almost 200 miles. Was all going well until the last 30 minutes home when the idle got rough and nearly stalled 4 times. Details in my high mileage T5M thread.

The tool can be bought at FCP for about $80, but if you just put the tool on and crank on it, it will break. Fire, drilling, and lube are your friends on the delta links. Those tires look old based on the amount of cracking. When my delta link bushings were failing, I got weird wear on the edges of my rear tires. But those tires just look spent. Once they start cracking like that, their life is pretty short.

Re: Sanity Check: Evap Purge Valve Stuck Open?

The shutoff valve is there to allow tank leak detection testing. On that 98 it would only close after you drive for a qualifying period with some driving conditions met. Once you idle it can do the test and close the shutoff valve, the only reason it ever needs to close the vent line for tank. The ...

Re: Replacing front struts without being in a rush

The best tool to have for a strut job is a pipe vice. Clamp the strut between the spring seat and the knuckle bolts, and it makes the job so much easier than using a regular vice, or no vice at all. Hardest part is getting the spring off the old strut. If you have a helper, it takes less than 20 min...

I guess for that to occur both the purge and shut off have to be open? Purge leaking or stuck open explains the "high vacuum". Re: Sanity Check: Evap Purge Valve Stuck Open?

A stuck Canister purge valve would produce both of the DTCs. During the test of the EVAP Canister shut-off valve, the Canister purge valve is pulsed. If the canister purge valve is stuck open the pressure drops too fast and the test fails. The Canister purge valve is normally closed and opens when ...

It's getting cold. I would just take the whole throttle body and control mechanism. Then when it's somewhere warm, Figure out how to get the arm safely off. Shouldn't cost much for the whole thing at a U-pull-it.

Check the quality of your reflector, either by carefully removing the lens or by shinning a flashlight into the housing. The reflective material tends to oxidize and flake off with age. I am following the Volvo 850 service manual for 1995-96 that can be found uploaded all over the inte...

Thinking I'm going to need a parts car to swap the rear end out of. Everything back here is so rusty. Totally different from the front half.

That is aluminum and it's bent, so really not sure what can be done about it. I think most shops would refuse to weld it.

Rear main seal is what I fear most - it would be the end of that car. Way too expensive to fix that. The turbo looked ok. If it is the RMS, best short term solution is ATP-205 or switch to 40 weight oil. And I say short term, but I switched to Mobil1 10w-40 HM over 2 years ago to prolong repairing ...

Yesterday I finally got around to fixing some of the leaks on my 150k mile1998 V70 GLT. The best method is to park in a secured garage or somewhere well lit and public. It's easy to get lug keys, or in some cases just forces keyed lugs off. If some one really wants your wheels, there really isn't much you can do about it if you park your car outside.

I've been using one of the Grom-USA units in my V70R for years now. Impressed with the sound quality. Actually.much better than the FM radio stations. Can also take calls and listen to all your media from your phone. Those units look slick. I've been on the lookout for a used one or one in the salv...

1999 S70 "AWD" Rescue Thread

So I was finally able to pick up the '99 S70 AWD I saved from the crusher. $400 for the car with 218k miles (and 4 good Blizak snow tires) + $200 for brand new Falken sport tires on decent Ariane rims. Not a bad deal. She started right up and drove a few miles perfect. What needs fixed ASAP: Needs n...

You can try to angle a straw from a can of penetrating oil up around the edge of the cap. Then take a big pie wench and go for broke. Buy another cap as well. Odds are it will start leaking after this.

No need to disconnect the battery. Just floor the gas and that should shut off the injectors. Flooding at startup is usually a bad electronic coolant temp sensor.

Mothers VLR does a great job cleaning the interior of my T5 and restored some pliability to and softened my seats. It works on Vinyl, leather, and rubber, so it's pretty great for cleaning your seats, dash pad, and door inserts. I believe Volvo used vinyl treated leather, but don't quote me on that.

Pull the relay off the shroud. Ground the low or high (not both at same time) speed fan wire to the intake manifold. Should make the fan come on, unless there is a wiring issue or the motor is dead. If nothing happens, you will have to trace the positive and ground wires off the fan motor and make j...

Considering the newest P80s are over 20 years old, I too think all the service literature should be made freely available. Volvo made all the money they were ever going to make on the P80s. I'm sure many dealers now just offer trade in value whenever someone brings in a broken 850.

Gas smell without a leak. I would investigate the evap system first, since its job is to collect fuel vapor and get it to the engine for combustion. If lines were never touched, they're probably dust now.

I've measured my front brake discs at 180F after a very spirited drive through some twisties. Maybe those drilled and slotted rotors do help.

Every time I've had a seized front caliper, I didn't get any pulling, but I did get slight vibration in steering wheel and a hint of burning brake scent.

Rotate tires and check pressures as well, just a 1psi difference can cause a pull to one side (can also be used to fix a pull).

Even when the alignment shop gets her to drive straight, there's always a pothole lurking around the corner waiting to put an end to that.

You could get some chrome paint and try to re-chrome the reflectors if you're bored, but when I looked into it I decided it wasn't worth it. Save the lenses if they are not horribly pitted. Last time I was near Philly, one of the Harry's-u-pull-it's near Allentown, PA had a big stock of Euros, including P80s. Unfortunately, I thought their prices were a bit high and they had core charges for stupid things like MAF sensors.

Re: Fuel Problems

Yes you can, been driving with the downstream O2 sensor unplugged for 30k miles. Runs great, no limp mode, get 2 codes relating to bank1sensor2 voltage and heater circuit malfunction. Gas mileage is normal. Goes into closed loop. LTFT doesn't do anything weird. If I plug the sensor in, car runs exa...

Re: New to Volvos some advice? $400 1999 Volvo S70

Want to consider changing the other fluids, especially the coolant and brake fluid if age is unknown. I'd probably flush out the old brake fluid just because it was sitting. The front flex hoses for the brakes may also be a good idea to replace. Other than that, timing and PCV, as already mentioned,...

Re: What did you do to your Volvo today? (now Sticky!!)

Just got home from a 1000 mile road trip. Had some interesting moments. Namely, I stopped to fuel up, popped the fuel door, but instead of the fuel door opening, all of the doors locked (with key in the ignition and chime sounding). Unfortunately, I did not realize this until after I closed my door....

Re: P80 bypass ps pump, which belt, which routing

I have been very curious regarding this topic for a while. I think the best option would be to either loop the in/out line son the pump, or make the pulley freewheel. Another option I have wanted to explore is custom fabricating a bracket to support a pulley in place of the PS pump. If done right, w...

Re: Fuel Problems

Exhaust is your problem. If you have a cat efficiency code (I bet you do), unplug the downstream O2 sensor and the car will think the cat is fine, but you must disconnect the battery for 15 minutes to reset the ECU. Either get that exhaust buttoned up tight, or order a new one. Without seeing it, i...

ECT is known to cause hard starting and is often overlooked. Do you have a CEL, pull any codes? What shape are the plugs and coil packs in?

Re: Fuel Problems

Best cat for fuel economy is no cat or a free flowing cat. Crappy gas mileage can be any number of things, including worn ignition components, dirty injectors, clogged PCV, stuck brake caliper, no compression, and bad vacuum leaks. You will get misfires on a non turbo if the exhaust is dumping right...

Re: What did you do to your Volvo today? (now Sticky!!)

Picked up a set of used Cooper touring tires for $140 today. Over 90% tread left, what a steal! Taking the scenic route, I came upon a mechanic's shop in the middle of nowhere with a red V70R, green '03 V70, and 2 black 850s parked around back. One was a mint '93 850 with over 300k miles and a tow p...

Do the glove test with another glove "sealing" the dipstick tube just to be sure. But it sounds like it will probably passes. How is your oil and coolant consumption?

centric rotors are good, they are the major player in the break hardware area. makes sense to get from FCP for the warranty, though expensive and heavy to return at I assume your expense? Yes returns on your own dime. One caliper will fit in a USPS medium flat rate box, 2 in a large box, which help...

sorry to hear that about the Cardone. Im not buying volvo on this one. any good pics on rebuilt (maby coated) rebuilt calipers? Coating usually fails within a few weeks. Re: 1998 Volvo S70 white smoke issue

I wouldn't worry too much if it's not smoking all the time and you are not losing coolant rapidly. White smoke in an NA usually means coolant (headgasket leak). If it's only driven short trips, it could just be condensation. The most troubling thing you need to take car of is the popped up dip stick...

My problem is whenever I hit the second turbo boost, I also turn on the third seat heater.
I agree, only time I accidentally hit the power button is when I nail a pothole at the same time.

Re: P80 heavy braking smell question

I second the temp test, you can just put your hand on the center of each wheel. you will find one is hot. the caliper is so seized it only activates at full pressure and stays there for the ride home, giving the smell until the pads wear down. light breaking and its not moving. there would be no sm...

I usually don't have a problem with people talking in the car, but there are definitely times when passengers really need to shut up while I'm driving. I think the touchscreens and stuff in new cars are a lot worse than handsfree phone as far as distractions go. They just enable these distracted dr...

I get what they're trying to do, but the restrictions on modifications are just ridiculous. I mean, it's not like everyone is going to be modifying their cars. I get that "every little bit counts" for reducing emissions, but I don't think Joe Shmo who just drives his car to work and the store and w...

Long story short. I installed oe breather and oe hoses to breather, new 5/8 hose and am installing a 5/8 inline catch can. Ordered all of the stuff to rebuild and reinstall the turbo. Smoke is almost gone but the oil cap is still pushing oil out even with a new oe cap seal. No smoke from the dipsti...

I hate all the bureaucracy around owning an automobile these days. Just think, in 3 years all 98 and older P80s will be considered historical vehicles, which in most states means no more inspections, no emissions, and even no yearly taxes!

Sounds like it could be a dying battery. Would also check your grounds and B+ cable to starter and cable to main fuse box. Most autoparts stores will test alternator and battery for free.

More likely the fuel pump or fuel pump relay than injectors. Get a cheap tire gauge (will be destroyed unless you have a fuel pressure gauge) and check fuel pressure at the schrader valve after prime (before start), then at idle and report back.
