1999 V70T5M Nissens Radiator incorrect fitment induced Replacement Failure

Post by abscate »

Update this failure was caused by poor install workmanship

Hold the phone on that Nissens replacement

The charmed life I lead.

Got back from a Boston road trip, went out to get subs for dinner. Right front tire felt a bit low, so hopped out to look, and saw a stream of coolant.

Drove the 150 yards back to house, coolant low light came on in driveway.

This morning, looks like a radiator failure - coolant from above the lower radiator house on driver side.

Radiator replaced 40k miles ago, in July 2013

Copying Neils experience from the parts forum for posterity
I've posted this elsewhere, but my (somewhat limited) experience with both suppliers on my 93 850 NA was/is not great with either brand. If I were to do this again, I would look to find a good price on an OE part.

I bought a Nissens from FCP, and it leaked out of the box from near the top hose. I sent it back (return cost from Canada was almost the price of the unit) and had to pay the shipping on the new Behr part. It was/is a pain as even with new Volvo top pipe (and even tried aftermarket pipes) it is a swine to get it not to leak from the top hose. It took a lot of fiddling to eventually stop the constant weeping (and not just from me in frustration!!). By the way, I've never had a problem with FCP, their help or even the cost of their shipping to Canada.

It was a year ago now since I tossed the OE unit, so I don't know if this is true for it also, but I noticed when I was working on my 2000 V70R that the OE radiator in that has a metal (brass?) insert in the top pipe to help it maintain it's shape when you tighten the top pipe clamp. Had no problems with this. So if the OE part for the 850 has this I'd opt for that for this alone!!
My thoughts are that the aftermarket parts have a flimsy top hose mount that collapses out of round when you tighten it.

With the benefit of hindsite, it is possible what I thought was a fault with the Nissen radiator may have been the same problem. Either way, my vote is OE, so now need to find a cheap supplier!!

Good luck with whichever way you go!

Neil.

It happens.
Nissens is OK, no better, no worse than an OEM radiator but at 1/2 the price.
Some make it, some do not

I have updated my thinking after the fiasco with the radiator top hose snapping off on my 2000 V70R. OE radiator and possibly original, car has 165k miles on it and the dealer had been moving the front sub-frame without disconnecting the upper hose (known week spot). I used to be a big fan of the OE radiator until I found the metal insert in the upper hose had worked its way out of the radiator outlet and it snapped at the point where it had been. Also OE radiator has a little stand-off nub along the bottom, and when (and they will) the intercooler mounting brackets detach, it allows that nub to rub through the intercooler fins. This is a turbo only issue.

I replaced with a Nissens unit and found this one to look better made with a thicker top hose outlet that previous version and had no issue with the top hose sealing first time. At half the price and the low miles I do, I reckon with luck this may see me out! I guess time will tell.

Oh, and I always recommend using a new top hose and replacing the thermostat while doing this as a new hose seals better, and the thermostat is a good precaution if of unknown age or > 3 years old.

Steve, which radiator are you going to get? Are you considering getting one of those shiny race radiators from eBay?

I feel like a radiator leaking on a 5-speed is so wrong. Less ports being used. Should be a simpler machine with less things to go wrong... Glad your low coolant light caught this thing. Which reminds me... I should probably replace that sensor in the Spring, just to be on the safe side.

I'll probably go Nissens again. I only have about three more years life left in this car before I move to either Queenston or Queens...

WRONG radiator.

And if you consider this one, the core is welded UPSIDE DOWN.

I've posted this before, but I read about IPD or some other parts house starting development of an aluminum radiator for P80s and scrapping due to....wait for it....cracks in the tanks.

Aluminum is subject to fatigue cracking and failure and, installed in a mount designed for plastic tanks, is not long for this world. I haven't heard much about that do88 unit from Ebay, but I don't think there's any reason it'd last longer than the factory or Nissens units. We deride "plastic", but plastics are fine materials when used correctly.
