I bought a 2nd hand SC810 for my 850 turbo Wagon,only $10 so no biggie there.Most of the bulbs are out.......argh!!!!!
The Volvo parts "man" helped me with the code....no charge, just pleasant chit chat.
So to the point, as I had the "off" signal on the radio I thought that I had to leave the radio on (key in position 11)for two hours or worse drive around in Toronto traffic.
As luck would have it( or maybe not) I turned off the car and locked it, returned the next morning(at least 6 hours) to find the radio asking for the code.
I do not know if this completely dispells the urban legend of key in position 11 or not.
This procedure of "position 11" always felt like the boy on the sea side of the dyke with his finger plugging the hole in the wall and having to come up for air every so often.Clearly standing on dry land would be a better option
I would think that this would work for all radios.

You just somehow got lucky....position I is what the owner's manual says for 2 hours. I have heard of folks unhooking the battery with the radio in the "off" position and they have a window of about 30 seconds to get the code in when the battery is hooked back up or it goes to "off" again.

No problem...
I do think that position II will also work (that's what I thought you meant), but there is more load on other electrical devices in your car with this setting so more chance that your battery will go low. Of course, it's important to turn off your headlights and any other items like cabin lights, climate control fan, etc....all except your radio. That has to say on.

This is a dealership in TX that I was able to get my code with just the VIN number. It may have helped that I told them I was a body shop with a car we purchased with a salvage title.

Am in the midst of trying to get my radio going and learned a couple things.
1) The radio has to be ON for the 2-3 hours, not just have the power available. Position 1 or 2 is irrelavant.
2) The dealer can only give you the code they have on file for your VIN, may not be the original radio. EVEN FROM THE FACTORY. May have been changed before the car left the original dealer.
3) If the code doesn't work the first, or worst case 2nd time, STOP. Don't go for 3. Pull the radio and check it based on the serial #. Do you really think you can't punch in 4 numbers in the proper sequence? My correct code was hand written on the top of the radio. The code I got from the dealer was incorrect, (yes I tried it 3 times.)
4) Popping the fuse does nothing since the radio has to be ON for the time allotted.
Am now waiting the 2 hours with the radio on. Will update only if it does not work.

I really don't want to wait 2 hours for my car radio to reset. If I disconnect the radio completely from the power and wait overnight, will it stop displaying "off" and ask for the code (which I found written down) again?
Thanks
Thanks
