Options for rear main seal if any

after a bad experience with usual mechanic(i suspect they 'changed' oil without draining old thereby blowing seals), i have a pretty good leak in rear main seal i think. Going through 1 qt every 800 mi or so. Went to different mechanic and they put Lucas along with oil in engine. this seemed to help some but after 3000 miles leak is getting pretty bad again. I have several questions and advice needed. Car is in good shape except for this although i have noticed a raw gas smell at idle recently. I am financially challenged to put it politely so i would like to maximize my car use without spending 2k to fix everything perfectly on a 3k car. When i went to Volvo they automatically said the seal fix along with several other expensive fixes to car. I know in a perfect world i should do this but...the money thing. Okay my questions.

1. Will this oil leak get progressively worse to the point of being undriveable?
2. Will Lucas be an effective bandaid for a year or so or will it make things worse?
3. Should i just scrap the whole thing and go look for a new car which i would struggle to afford.
4. Could the raw gas smell be somehow related?
5. What other options do any of you suggest?

Thanks,
Desperate

additionally,

i noticed in looking around many references to the pvc system and oil trap. I AM getting oil around cap and actually around dipstick stem also. my situation i s seeming to get more dire the more i read. i am now concerned the lucas(sp) may swell up all the seals like its supposed to but seal in pressure from a clogged pcv system. this seems like a bad thing. if i did the pcv/oil trap fix would it relieve some pressure on rear main and buy me some time?

thanks again in advance,
Doug

Doug,
How's it going ? Sorry about the RMS problem though. Let me tell you from just having mines done.YOU HAVE TO GET THE SEAL REPLACED !! As bad as it sounds it could get worse it u keep trying to bandaid the problem. I live in Virginia and let me tell you, it costs to get it done but the good news is that if you shop around, you will find someone that can do for you at a reasonable price. Volvo wants $1200 and the average good class a mechanic wanted to charge 750 upwards to $900. the key ride around and shop for estimates go to any mechanic shop you see and ask how much they would charge and if they dont give you a good price go to another. Eventually you will find you one I promise. I found one that did mines for $600 bucks a far long cry for what everyone else wants let me tell you. Another thing if your pockets are short, got the RMS work done only then go back in a month and get the oil box and pcv done. you come out cheaper that way. Good luck . One more thing go to the dealer and buy the RMS seal yourself it would set u back $26 but its better than letting the mechanic get their cut you'll end up paying double.
