Rolling in Park

Post by Credit2u »

Had the car in park, but it is not locking in somehow. It is slowly drifting while in Park!

It's a slow roll though, not like it's in Neutral, no clicking or such.

Had the transmission replaced about 150 miles ago.

There is also some kind of noise coming from the passenger side front while driving that started about the same time the Park issue began.

I would grealty appreciate any ideas.

Thanks,

Checked the transmission fluid and it seems a bit high, but I can't imagine that is causing this to start.

The parking mechanism works by using a pin that locks into a toothed gear on the outside of the transmission. This explains it better -> http://auto.howstuffworks.com/automatic ... sion11.htm

I can think of only two things that would cause the car to roll in park. The first, either the locking pin or the notches have been stripped off, the second, the transmission is misaligned and the locking pin isn't being engaged fully.

I'm no transmission expert, but that's what I would suspect. I also don't really don't know how to test either. Sorry I can't be of more help.

I agree with polskamafia. It sounds like the trans is misaligned or the gear is stripped. Is this trans a rebuilt trans or used one? Does it have a warranty?

Used, think it's past the 90 days though.

What would the overfill of trans oil cause? Do I need to drain some of it, or is this not an issue?

Overfilled ATF fluid would cause shifting and driveability issues, not parking issues. Lambo has a similar problem, I'm gonna post links to this thread and the other one. Hopefully one of you stumbles across a solution or somebody else can suggest something.

I'm thinking you might have to take it to a shop to have them take a look. I mean, I don't know how you would be able to take a look at the parking mechanism w/o removing the trans.

Perhaps one of the driveshafts isn't pushed in all the way. To hold the car level, the transmission 'park' gear relies on the wheels not being able to rotate in opposite directions.
