Hello all:
Just wanted everyone's advise on this.
I am currently driving a 02 Acura RSX Manual 71000km (2dr coupe). My parents are selling their 97 Volvo 850 Turbo @ 91,000km. The car is in mint condition and has no problems whatsoever. What do you guys think? Should I sell trade the RSX in and get the Volvo? I want a 4 dr now and I would love more power ... The volvo has 222hp vs 160hp on RSX. Any advise whether or not I should do it?

Trading in the Acura, since it's still fairly new, is probably the easiest way to go. You could probably get more by selling it yourself. It'd be intersesting to see which car does better 0-60, I would guess the Acura but have never been in a Volvo Turbo. Once your Volvo gets to 125k miles, things will start to go but you do say they kept it in good shape until now. Repair will be expensive on both if you don't do it yourself so that's a wash. Check edmunds.com or other web sources to confirm reliability, repair costs and value info, etc. Of course, if your parents still love you, you'll get a heck of a deal on that Volvo!!!!

I agree... get the Volvo! Lots of room and even a stock T-5 in good shape will embarrass a Type S RSX. I agree with you guys. I'm only concerned about the reliablility and stuff like evaporator that needs replacing, turbo oil leak, rear seal replacement, and all other costly expenses on the volvo while the japanese RSX is relatively a lot cheaper to maintain
(I have yet to spend a dime on RSX repairs to date!)

I've owned two Hondas and my wife one (same parent company/parts as Acura), and all three were very good in terms of maintenance. Never an unsceduled item or repair, except for a cv half shaft axle on my '88 Civic.
That said, my 850 turbo is fast, luxurious and safe. The Hondas are simply appliances by comparison: they just get you from point a to point b. And in my cases the ergonomics were awful. Can't speak on Acuras on this point -- you'd know better than I.
My 850 has just a K&N filter, no chip or exhaust added, but it's likely the maintainance will cost more per mile than a Honda/Acura over the life of the car.

The RSX will probably be a cheaper car in the long run - Japanese cars usually are (slam intended). Compare the ride - The Volvo will win that battle. A turbo Volvo should also perform better and the gas milage will be lower. Both should last for another 150K miles with the propper maintenance.Anonymous wrote:Hello all:

I am a gear head - when my 850 Turbo was totaled in 96 all I could afford was a NA. It did not have the performance of the turbo but I also had a 944S sitting in the garage that could eat 99% of all of the cars on the road for breakfast. For me it is a easy choice - a comfortable Volvo turbo that hauls a$$.
