The charcoal canister stores vapors from the gas tank. Each time you start the car a solenoid opens and vacuum sucks out the stored vapors. If there is a leak in this vacuum line or the solenoid is malfunctioning the evap code is initiated. The solenoid is usually located near the canister and can be pulled and tested. First check to see if it is closed by trying to blow air through it, then using some wires connect it to the battery and see if it opens and air can pass through it, if if functions OK then trace the vacuum line looking for cracks or tears. Hope this helps.
