Re: 1998 S70 Ongoing issue with Transmission Range Switch. Pin out of place

Post by ferocity02 »

UPDATE... A couple months after finding the pushed pin on the PNP switch, the issue came back. It was much more intermittent, happening once every few weeks. So while frustrated beyond belief, I neglected the issue. But recently it has been doing it every other day and needs my attention once again...

So I'm back to square one.

I replaced the PNP switch which improved things, but what really solved it was finding the melted wire short in the harness going away from the PNP switch to the ECM. Found it by looking for shorts to ground on the harness. I'll separated wires and reinsulated them, whamo problem went totally away.
Do you recall whereabouts in the harness the short was located? I think that might be my next step. I'm also contemplating just running new wires between the PNP switch and the transmission computer to tally rule out the wiring.

UPDATE:

I found the issue. The replacement range switch was garbage. The construction inside does not provide a real positive connection. I cleaned the switch and stretched out the springs to provide more force on the tabs. The issue seems to be fixed for the time being. If it happens again my plan is to get a used OEM switch and rebuild it, or just get a new OEM switch, but they are pretty expensive.

Can you name the defective brand so we can add it to our wall of shame?

Parts that don’t work out of box don’t deserve our money nor our time.

It is Pro Parts, or Professional Parts. Their part number is 28430012. The Volvo part number is 9466012.

FCP Euro used to sell it, but I see they no longer do ever since I sent back the first one.
