Begin with thanks to Deepsouth for his EVAP write up from 2014. For once, a system that matches that in my 1998 V70 with the canister in the front fender. I've smoke tested everything in the front end that I can do alone. Maybe this evening I can get some help to pump smoke back toward the tank. Two person job.
Here is a photo of some components:
I shotgunned the cannister purge valve and replaced it. Code came back.
I am suspicious of the shutoff purge valve and am thinking about applying some voltage to it to see if it even reacts.
Deepsouth mentions a pressure sensor and the rollover valve (pictured) back by the tank. I have the back of the V70 all apart and access to the fuel pump area, so I will try to look at these.
BIG QUESTION: What is the sense of the forum on how likely each of these components is to fail ASSUMING (will test) no leakage of air into system?
So...EVAP Code saga continues Topic is solved

Solved?????
Smoke tested back end of the EVAP circuit and found a leak. One that I had already fixed.
You know on these cars back behind the fuel filter there is a little bit of hose that has different IDs on each end? I had found that a long time ago when I first had this EVAP code. I actually bought that little oddball hose, but I was in a rush and what was available was one of these:
Uro Parts 8862 not reinforced looks like bad rubber
This part lasted less than a year before splitting at both ends. Never again, Uro. Even for a tiny bit of hose.
I think that when this new Uro hose failed, I figured I had eliminated the back end. So, since this car does not have most of the parts people usually see fail (like the J-hose) I thought it might be the purge valve and replaced it. Fault was cleared and all seemed fine, but then the check engine light came on.
Well, now I have to let the car go through all of its cycles and see if it comes back. Replaced it with fuel line hose.
In both of my cars, I've been going through all of the lines that might carry petroleum of any kind and replacing them with braid-reinforced fuel line. Bought a variety of sizes, ten feet of each.
Man, I hope this is fixed. Just moved to Ohio and can't get a permanent plate for my car until it passed their Echeck. The 30 day temp plate has long ago expired.

By the way, the smoke machine I use is a pickle jar with a soldering Iron in it. Crazy, but it works.
