98 s70 cylinder 1 misfire, running rough

Post by Vikki »

Hi all,
My 98 s70 nonturbo is really turning me into a driveway mechanic. The check engine light was on for months before I finally started doing something. After buying the Chilton's manual, I have replaced the fuel filter (complete with getting gas all over me and the garage floor), changed the spark plugs, distributor cap and rotor. Spark plug wires are on order as I did not want to pay $95 for a set from the dealer. Auto Zone checked the comp for me and said there was a "cylinder one misfire." After re-checking the gaps on the spark plugs (my first time changing plugs ever), I found what looks like a burn on the plug holder(?) connected to the boot. It was not there when I changed the plugs. Also, it was in cylinder 5 as I read it; the far left cylinder while facing the engine. Because of checking the wiring diagram in the manual, I rearranged the plug wires on the distributor and now the car won't start. I am going to rearrange again but would appreciate any input. The car has been idling so badly the last few days, it feels like it may be running on 3 cylinders instead of 5. Please help if possible!

The firing order is 1-2-4-5-3. The cap should be marked so you can ensure the wires are going to the right spark plugs.

thanks... I found the markings after I posted earlier. Now the car won't start. I don't know what I've done, but I'm waiting for delivery of new wires before messing with it again.

Wait till the wires arrive, yes. When you get back to it, take a deep breath and lay all your parts out in front of you. Look at the engine, looking for vacuum lines you may have pulled off etc.

Trace everything you've worked on to its source, slowly. Write things down if you need to to keep track. And remember you need three things for ignition: spark, fuel and air.

Get back to us if you continue to have trouble.

ok... I have now replaced the spark plug wires including ignition coil wire, following the diagram in the Chilton manual very carefully. It still won't start. I haven't found any vacuum hoses disconnected but it does sound like there must be one. There is also a humming sound coming from the engine after the key is removed. It goes on for a minute or so, and with an audible click it stops. Any ideas?

ps.. thanks for the help so far!

Fuel pump.

Remove your intake and shoot a little ether in the throttle body and attempt to crank- if it fires you have a fuel/air problem.
