Can I get my B5234T3 to start with salvaged electronics?

Post by JackSM »

Hello all!

After a bit of a hiatus from Volvo ownership, I’m finally starting my dream build using a Volvo 5 cylinder. It will be somewhere between a 1930's Bugatti and a hotrod. I needed the engine to start he frame design process so I pull the trigger on a B5234T3 from a 2002 C70 this week, along with a 960 bellhousing and oil pan from a salvage yard. I got the engine wiring harness and ECU, but unfortunately, the ignition system and other related wiring were gone. Originally I was looking for a complete car to avoid figuring this out, but I couldn’t pass up an engine with 47k miles over the 300k mile cars I was looking at.

Is there hope for getting this engine running using used parts? And which parts would I need?

I've been researching, but keep finding conflicting information about what components are VIN specific or linked. I’ve found a lot of the parts on ebay, but I'm not confident in what would require dealer programming.

So far I think I need:
  • Ignition switch
    Antenna ring
    Matched key
    Immobilizer control unit
    Dash wiring
    Gauges?
Could I get all of these from a junk car with the same engine and transfer them directly?

Or am I totally misguided and should just get a MaxxECU and their wiring harness. I like to tinker and learn, I'm not in a rush, and I'm not currently planning any changes that would require turning, so I would like to avoid dropping $2k for the stand alone setup that will likely sit around for long time when they won't really impact the rest of the build.

Any info, advice, or parts suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Not an expert, so please dont be strict to my suggestions. I would probably try to minimize electronic part and keep it more closer to the style you are going for(30's). Would be great if you are able to find someone skillful to remove immobilizer from that ecu so you dont need it for running. In case it is too much work- go back to that car and look if there is a key somewhere laying around and remove anthena ring too(you can always order key to the vin through volvo). A lot of times you can find those 200k plus miles cars on Facebook marketplace for 1.5k or less. You can get it, remove all parts that you need and send it to junk for $500 minimum.
Not familiar with Maxxecu but it sounds like a valid option and they might possibly customize it to your needs.

Almost all of them are linked to software versions. It's not all plug n play. Your best bet is to go for a standalone ECU.

The 2002 c70 uses the p80 platform so the

Key chip
DIM
ECU
Lock module?
Immobilized module?

All need to be VIN matched

Aside from a stand-alone ECU, you can always run the motor on an M4.4 ECU from a 98MY turbo car. We're running an 01MY car in my wife's 855 using an M4.4 ECU.
I would work with Aaron at VAST to sort out the details.

You would need to harvest an engine harness from an appropriate non-ME7 donor, as well as an ECU.

Using a stand-alone would also probably require a different harness, or at least a rework of what you have. MaXXECU has a Volvo T5 harness, but it's not cheap.

I've been down quite the rabbit hole looking at M4.4 options. It's looking like I can get an M4.4 ECU and engine wiring harness for pretty cheap.

I'm a bit less confident in the addition wiring.
I think I can direct wire an OBD2 port. That seems simple enough just needing 2 wires if I'm understanding it right. Then for an ignition switch I just need a 12v signal wire?

Google search has gone down hill. It's gotten hard to search the depths of old forums and so many pictures are long gone when you do fine them.

This additional wiring isn't all that difficult. The A side of the ECU connector is the engine stuff and the B are any body side connections. The stock harnesses split. I may have a couple links for PDFs I can add later.

Now, if you want to keep it COP, then you'll at the very least need to chat with Aaron and set up the ECU for COP control, as well as get an appropriate bin for it. You can also covert it to distributor, but I think that get's complicated on a N-S orientation, as the distributor winds up at the "back" of the engine, near the firewall. We did that for a while on her car when we first did the engine swap. Converted to COP later.

That engine should have exhaust VVT on it, but you don't have to mess with it if you don't want to. At least not right off the bat. The cam events on those are fine if they are left "off". (P2R cams, on the other hand).
Our car has exVVT and we messed with using it for a bit, but it wasn't playing nice and not really worth the effort, so I have it disabled currently. I may hunt down a one of the VVT-delete conversion pulleys at some point in the future, but it's been fine for 5-6 years.
