Another question about Power Steering

Post by MarinerMan »

I have encountered the dreaded power steering whine. It won’t be present when I turn on the car, but after a few minutes of driving it appears. When driving in a straight line, it is a relatively quiet whine, and if I turn for a 90° turn it gets to be a much louder “definitely power steering groaning whine.
What I have done:
- Replaced the power steering fluid with new, as I was unsure of original age of fluid. Used the CHF202, not ATF.
- I checked with a borescope, the power steering rack and saw no evidence of leaking.
- The reservoir gets pressurized and there is a slight hiss when opening after driving. There are also bubbles forming on the surface. I purchased the 2005+ reservoir that has the suction and return under the level line.
- I cleaned off the power steering pump suction end and replaced the hose, and tightened it down. Thought there may have been air getting in there.

Any ideas for next steps? Should I re-bleed the system again? Replace the pump? I don’t have a good place to lift the car to drop the rack out, so I am hoping that doesn’t need to be replaced. If it does, I will have to take it to a shop, but that will unlock the subframe bushings “side quest” as they are likely due for a refresh as well.

Would love to hear input, ideas, or criticism. Thanks y’all in advance.

Let it for a few weeks, change fluid again. It can take 50-100 miles of running to get air out of the system , in my experience .

To bleed the power steering, turn the engine on,remove the cap from ps reservoir and turn the wheel fully from one side to another for a 10-15min or untill the noise stops.
Just make sure that oil is at correct level.

Atf is correct fluid for p80...chf 202 is for p2.

I didn’t realize that one should do the turns for that long. I read other posts where people said 10-20 turns hard over to hard over. I will do it longer.
P80s say ATF, but Volvo and FCP recommend CHF202 for the 99+. Some point in the chassis numbers (didn’t get to write it down), they switched over and didn’t change the manual. I could be wrong about this, it is all secondhand research. Thank you for your input.

I’ve seen both recommended for the 99, and I run both in my fleet of 4 1999s and one 1998

The pS pump changed in 99 to the separate reservoir design so it’s likely that’s the driver for the gear oil change

Items to run the ATF in the auto cars so I only keep one jug of spare fluid for both PS and auto trans

Volvo now supply a CHF202 equivalent for the Pentosin power steering cars including P80's 99-. I'm using CHF202 on my 00 R and no issues. The main thing is to NOT mix Pentosin and ATF.
