P80 Muffler wars 1999 V70 NA Shaggkira (60 mm pipe sourcing)

Post by abscate »

Musings on Muffler

I have a Bosal aftermarket Cat on Shaggkira, and a new Starla rear muffler

The 'ball joint' connection from the Bosal was a bit short of the Starla - my jury rig lasted two months.

The Starla Pipe is a 60 mm metric pipe, or 2 3/8 OD - an odd size you cant get at NAPA or FLAPS , Ive found out.

Im trying to fab with 2 1/2 inch and fibergalss packing and muffler cement.

Part numbers to come.

Ive found the connector on ebay in the UK

This is one of the times I would be taking it to a muffler shop. They may be able to make an insert piece or sleeve to make the 2 parts fit better.

I was surprised by the 2 3/8 mongrel size of my tailpipe (turbo). The 2.5" flange is too loose, 2.25 too small. I had the 2.5" flanged pipe extension from AZ, so I stopped into local Midas, had them grow the other end to exactly slip over the stock part of the tailpipe that I cut off to replace the bumper bracket. The tech took half a minute to do it and was not going to charge me. I slipped him a tenner. Then, used my chain-wheel pipe cutter to cut off the 2.5 inch flange which stuck out too far anyway. Problem solved.

I’ve got the mandrel expander, fiberglass exhaust pack, permeatex cement, and clamps and connectors.

Will knock it off tomorrow with a 2 1/2 inch extension piece

This was self inflicted. I bought the Starla muffler for the OE cat, and the Bosal cat has a skinnier pipe.

The walker muffler 251237 would have fit with just the single donut clamp

I had to kludge up to 2 1/2 inch extension, then back to 2 3/8 ( 60mm) to attach

Is anyone interested in 60 mm connectors and repair pieces?

These are only available in EU UK so I’m thinking of putting together a order for 5-10 pieces and consolidating shipping

If that section is too large just cut a cross, so four slot, and that can help close the area tighter. Use a little material to wrap or seal any small opening that has exhaust seepage.

Those exhaust sleeves rust out so fast. I fought with them for about six years until I finally went to a shop and had everything welded using quality stainless pipe.

The OEM half-circle clamps are also pretty terrible. An FCP reviewer recommended oval split flange clamps. Here are the notes:
"The formed side (rounded) butts up against the ball or cup so that it's not cutting into it.
Measure the OD of the pipe (not the flared part) and look for a FORMED OVAL flange. Get a pair of these. Get a pair of 2 1/4" grade 8 bolts.
For my non-turbo S70 I think I used their FX35 (for 2 1/8 OD pipe). But don't take my word for it. https://www.bearriverconverters.store/s ... uct&q=fx35 "

They still appear to have a presence out there but only though their Ebay shop. This came up through EBay.ca:

https://www.ebay.ca/str/bearriverconverters

You may have to access it through the US EBay.com. I know I can have difficulty access some websites from Canada that are in the uS and I know the reverse can be too.
