This spark plug job was the biggest thing I’ve tackled on it yet, and I wanted to share a few things I learned along the way in case anyone else is diving into one of these older Volvos for the first time.
1. Be gentle - everything’s fragile.
The plastics and wiring are showing their age. Take your time with the coil pack connectors, and don’t force anything. I had to be really careful because some clips were ready to crack just from being touched.
2. Have the right tools.
For mine, I needed:
10mm wrench (coil pack bolts)
T25 Torx (engine cover)
Magnetic 5/8" spark plug socket - this saved me from dropping plugs into the well
If you have a torque wrench, it’s worth using to snug the plugs properly without overdoing it.
3. Take pictures before undoing anything.
Seriously, this made reassembly effortless. I just looked back at my phone and matched everything up exactly as it was. As a bonus I have been recording all work I do as a learning lesson for myself and something to look back on. still torn on if I want to start a small youtube channel to throw all this on.
this was a pretty fun thing to do. I have never tried plugs before on a car and this volvo made it a pretty simple first time.
