3 Things I Learned Changing Spark Plugs on My 2004 Volvo C70 as a total beginner.

Post by TJsPOV »

I bought this Volvo as a car to learn cars on. it’s had 13 owners, lived in 11 states, and has just over 80k miles. I got it for a pretty fair price, and it’s been a blast so far doing little things here and there.

This spark plug job was the biggest thing I’ve tackled on it yet, and I wanted to share a few things I learned along the way in case anyone else is diving into one of these older Volvos for the first time.

1. Be gentle - everything’s fragile.
The plastics and wiring are showing their age. Take your time with the coil pack connectors, and don’t force anything. I had to be really careful because some clips were ready to crack just from being touched.

2. Have the right tools.
For mine, I needed:
10mm wrench (coil pack bolts)
T25 Torx (engine cover)
Magnetic 5/8" spark plug socket - this saved me from dropping plugs into the well
If you have a torque wrench, it’s worth using to snug the plugs properly without overdoing it.

3. Take pictures before undoing anything.
Seriously, this made reassembly effortless. I just looked back at my phone and matched everything up exactly as it was. As a bonus I have been recording all work I do as a learning lesson for myself and something to look back on. still torn on if I want to start a small youtube channel to throw all this on.

this was a pretty fun thing to do. I have never tried plugs before on a car and this volvo made it a pretty simple first time.

I dont know how to reply back to both of you but thank you!

It was pretty fun. I have never sat in a volvo until I bought this one about 2 months ago but its been nothing short of incredible. Looking forward to what I do to this in the future!

You can just reply back in the thread like this , we are a relatively small group of 50 people or so who use this forum as our “ social media” platform.

There is also a thank you button in the menu, it’s a thumbs-up!

There are few Volvo members in the CornHusker State ( did I get that right?)

Ah Nebraska, that's why it's red. My college gf was from McCook, and one of her parents' cars was red, the most recent one. I asked why red. They said Cornhuskers. And I looked around the neighborhood and sure enough half the cars were red.

YES! Nebraska - born and raised here. I enjoy it. its cheap and good people all around. I've always liked the "red car theory" I was browsing for a something to learn on and saw one single red car. it being this little red Volvo.

I drove there and saw it and just absolutely love it. it has some weird quirks, the convertible top doesn't work, heated seats and headlights didnt work, and it had something drawing a constant 1.12 amps. (it was the amplifier and radio)

I have since fixed all of that in two months and have loved every minute of it.

The 2004 was the last year the C70 model was a “ p80” chassis, that’s this forum. When someone tries to tell you your in the wrong forum because it’s a 2004 model , you can tell them to politely “ sod off”

You do have the infamous first generation electronic throttle body but at < 90 k miles you are still 60k milrsfrom worrying about that.

Cn90 is one of our heavy Contributors, from OmA I think?

Nice Job - FYI I do all my own work (though occasionally I have been known to farm out a PIA job lol). When I buy a car my first action is to find the best forum for DIYers and join. I have been a member of many and still am for those cars operating in my fleet. This forum is by far and away the best I have ever seen. Not even a close competition.
Now that you have tackled spark plugs, you can begin to build upon that, gain more confidence and keep going. The people on here will help you tremendously.

nice C70 by the way. In my opinion the C70 had the nicest lines and the best balanced look of any of the converibles in the time frame.
