Confusion on my transmission

Post by Grantkat »

LIkely a dumb question here but I will own it :)
I am servicing my trans fluid and prior to starting i looked up my transmission id using my VIN. The indication is AW42AWD. I havent had a chance to hook up Vida and see what it says. However I am a bit confused because depending upon where and how you research you get different answers.

I have a 1999 S70 GLT with the B5254T, FWD

My confusion is I have seen it referred to as the AW42, AW42AWD, AW50-42LE.
When I research I have even seen it referred to as part of the GM 4T65E family..meaning I have seen it referred as AW42AWD/4T65E

The transmission is factory but I see no visible data plate, though addmittedly i havent looked everywhere on the unit

so what is it?

As your car is FWD, the AW42AWD is not in your car. That is the AWD option. As it is a GLT they ran with the 4 speed auto until the end of production in 2000. I've heard rumor of the base model maybe getting the 5 speed auto in late 99 but that is rumor. I believe the 5 speed auto only came out in 2000 in the base model/NA and the V70R.

GM trans was only used in the XC90 T6 that I know of. Piece of junk trans.

I check IPD USA website for details like that. They list a 99 V70 GL

https://www.ipdusa.com/Catalog/Index?categorycrumbs=0

If you click on the link it does show the trans type as part of the vehicle description. If you click the more details under that it gives all the info.

OK so according to IPD it would be an AW50-42.
