OK back on this one. Volvo lists the parts numbers for the 98 V70 T5 auto as:
31256240 - Outer - Turbo auto - This also relates to another number which is 271826. However, that number seems to track back to a NLA kit for inner and outer? The RHF axle part # I'm told is: 8601099/8111310. Both numbers are now discontinued by Volvo
Volvo lists this as fitting both Manual and Auto turbos outer CV joints
LHF axle part # : 8111309
Again, I have to assume these part numbers correlate to the CV boots Volvo list as correct as I can find no confirmation of this.
FCP Euro list these part numbers : 31256237 = GKN Lobro # 300439 for a turbo outer
https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo- ... n-31256237
However, if you look at the info fitment detail they only show it fits manual trans??
I can find no cross reference for 31256240 = 31256235?? Normally if there is an up-change they list the change from to?
31256230 - Inner - Turbo auto - I can find no reference anywhere to a part number I can cross reference to a GKN Lobro part.
I can find no cross reference again for 31256230 = 31256225. I know that some have referenced the Audi/VW boots. So for a turbo is the recommendation GKN : 300597 ?? Looking at the info on this it has only a 22mm smaller diameter. Is that not a bit of a stretch for the shaft?
Again if you hunt on FCP Euro website, it has this listed:
https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo- ... 27#fitment
GKN Lobro #: 300497 - But again only shows it fitting a manual trans inner?? Yet Volvo shows the 31256230 as fitting both auto and manual trans 98 turbo cars??
It would be handy (I think someone may have done this but can't find reference to it) of axle part numbers to CV boot options.
On another note, I have a RHF axle with no label on it. It has good boots and is in good shape. It is from a -98 car as it has the axle nut rather than the bolt. No idea what it is from as I have not had a -98 car since around 2016 which was an NA 97 850.
All I can give in way of help is the outer section of shaft between the CV boots is approx. 27mm in diameter if that helps. It may be narrower under the boot. Does that relate to the 24mm diameter I have seen referenced, hence the GKN # 300439?
Sorry to be a pain on this guys, but I want to make this 100% clear in my mind of Axle part number to boots prior to ordering. As I am ordering for someone else, I don't want to be stuck with parts I can't use, or axles out of a car and finding I have the wrong inner boots. I am confident on the outers being GKN Lobro # : 300439. I think the only inner one's I have were for a friends 98 V70 NA.
Confused? I did read the original post again:
viewtopic.php?t=64252
The problem is if you read it it was written for an 850. There are references to V/S70's but there is way too much non-specific references and often unclear if writers are referencing manual/auto trans, turbo or NA. Some are specific but I have found this whole process totally frustrating.
Many thanks.
Neil.

Neil,
check this out:
viewtopic.php?t=69419
is it possible the part number is for the CV axle as opposed to the boot itself?

Thanks for the link, however, other than confirming the part number for the axle (which is great in itself) most of the links are no longer working as they were intending. They just go to generic webpages.
The part number for the RHF axle fitted to the car must be : P9163582 The LHS axle would be P9163581 I don't think the LHS one is that size as the shaft diameter for that is 33mm!! As it has the same collar on it as a spare I have, I know that is not that diameter. Again, there was no label on that shaft unfortunately.
Appreciate the help and anyone taking the time to do so!

For a 98 turbo I have used 300597 several times for the inner. On a 98 the CV is round not hexagonal. GKN 300597 is what you want.
Would it help if I took measurement of one? I think I still have one NIB in stash.
These GKN boots are not lasting as long as they used to. Just had as set fail at under 2 years

Well that is disappointing to hear the GKN boots are not lasting as they should.
Yes it would help if you don't mind. I have seen your post and as I recall, both axles had the round inner can. I can find the RHF axle listed in Europe but not here, but the information is sketchy as best. Our local Volvo parts guys are usually pretty good but they cannot find a reference to the RHF axle fitted to the car. If you can measure the axles, I can at least then confirm if the spare -98 axle I have is a FWD turbo one at least. It does have the round inner can. No idea why I have it or what it is from as the only P80 FWD's I've owned were all NA's.
Much appreciated.
I have been corresponding with the car's owner. We may just go ahead and order the suggested parts and just in case, I'll order some new cv boot straps and worst case I'll remove the original straps and pack new grease in and fit new straps for now. I could not see any reason why the grease is leaking other than the lowered suspension possibly pulling the boots off the inner cans. No obvious cracks or splits I could see. If we get the wrong ones I'll just add them to the stash.

I tried looking up the GKN 300597 and the part number did not come up on the AutohausAZ website. Looks like they have updated the part number to this:
