So my buddy that bought my 00 V70 SE base, called me a few days ago. The fan was intermittent and often not running at all on any speed.
I said it was likely the fan motor itself, but I have spare tested motors and also untested, but hopefully good resistor units.
He brought the motor over to me to test, but when I saw the motor and felt the bearing I knew it was not a failing bearing but likely the brushes.
So he took a motor and resistor unit and headed back home. Half an hour later he called to say all is well and the new motor is working as it should. Resistor unit not needed.
So 2 questions/observations:
1) I always like to understand why stuff fails and if the parts can be repaired for future re-use. I took the rear cover off and the then realized you need to pull the fan blade wheel off. How do you do this without damaging the center section?
2) It was interesting during disassembly as I had watched I think it may have been Robert's video on servicing a motor, but his was from an 850 and was different to the one I have to look over. What surprised me was the unit said it was a Volvo part with the Volvo name in the plastic as well as a Behr branding on it too. I knew Behr was an OE supplier. What surprised me was the name on the actual fan motor was Delco, and says made in the USA? I didn't know Delco supplied parts for OE parts? Or is it possible only the motor has been replaced at some point and the fan wheel and the casing have been reused? I don't think so as the motor label dates it to 1998 as well as the rest of the unit.
Neil.

About 12 years ago I bought a 'rebuilt' blower unit for my 850 from somebody on eBay. The motor was new and ran fine but the fan blades vibrated -- I think the balance clips had been lost or disturbed. I put the motor in a vise and gently held it while tapping the motor with a rubber mallet and pulling up gently on the fan. With each tap, the fan lifted a tiny bit.... fifty taps later and the fan blades were free of the motor shaft.
