Hi, I'm a new driver and chose to buy a 1994 Volvo 850, it's my first winter with the car and i was wondering how to use the gears to slow down without using the brakes too much(I don't wanna skid), 3rd gear doesn't do too much to help, and Low does way too much and I feel a big jerk pulling me back when I use it. What other options do I have?
Thanks.

Do not attempt to slow by downshifting only in inclement weather. The gearing ratio of the manual trans is a wide ratio and you will have front wheel skid on slippery roads (the auto trans is even worse). Let your ABS do its job and you will have a safer ride using the brakes to slow.

yea downshifting an auto tranny like that is just generally bad for it. The gears are meant for easier starting out.
You dont mention if you car has tracs, or what your tires are like, tires with good tread are essential for safe winter driving.
The first snow/ ice you see, go find a totally empty lot (no poles lights etc), and practice, learn that boundaries of the car. Just be careful and reasonable.

No, I don't have tracs, but my brakes, rotors, and tires have been recently replaced - no studs on the tires, i figured that a 4000 lb car should be reletively fine. And i'll definitly go test it out in an empty lot.
Thanks guys.
