1993 Volvo 850 - Door stay fixing how to (Resolved)

Post by hcampan »

Hi everyone,

I managed to successfully resolve a door problem (see pictures) and thought it could be of some help to others.

I have used many of your contributions and wanted to add mine in exchange. Have a good reading.

I bought the car with the driver door making a terrible clacking noise when opened and closed. It was actually the little guide inside the door that gives several positions to the door opening.

From this site : http://au.geocities.com/OZBRICK850/door-stay_fix.html

I saw my problem was even more serious as the weldings were all gone and the sitting of the guide was free to move.

So here is how I managed.

Caution : See on the pictures the wire I used to prevent the sitting of the guide from falling inside the car body ! Be also careful with your tools. I lost one in the battle which is still jailed in it.

- You will need to take the door down. Like said in the site, it is quite heavy but can be taken out by one person. Putting it back is better with your wife or buddy guiding you.

- You will also need some bolts and a driller.

Door is out. Ready to drill.

Some of others having the same problem may be have some welds still holding. I didn't. But the part inside the body must be held against it. I used a combination a 3 screw drivers applying sufficient pressure so I could drill through the car body and the guide sitting.

Fixed ! The door is ready to be put back on.

My door is now fully functional with no more noise. Still, I can see the pressure applied by the guide, is moving the metal around the sitting. It will break one day but holds pretty good for today.

Hope it will help you. Ask questions if you need.

Cheers

Hubert

Hubert,
Both of my doors are like yours with little to hold the door stop. This encourages me to try to fix them. Thanks very much.

Holler1,

Yes just do it ! Like says the comercial.

I was fed up of having this terrible clacking noise. My car is old ok. But not cheap and clumsy. I like this car and all I can do on it that will keep it smooth, I'll do.

Voila. Take your chance, it's an added peace of mind (and ears !).

Hubert
