98 v70 AWD temperature sensitive no crank-partially resolved

Post by holler1 »

I have been chasing an intermittent "no crank", i.e. sometimes the car would not crank although all the lights looked normal. It mostly shows up in cold weather. With the temp today in the 30s, it would not crank. I connected a jumper wire from the blade (small) terminal on the starter solenoid to a terminal that comes out near the starter relay in fusebox 3 (kidney shaped box near the strut top). This allowed the car to crank and start. I disconnected the wire and again it would not crank. Connected it again and it started, so I left it that way. I had already checked the starter and solenoid, and replaced the ignition switch (electrical part). I bought a new starter relay, but did not install it after finding that the terminal mentioned above is "hot" when I turn the key to position 3.

The V70 circuit diagrams posted at http://volvo.techno.org.pl/wiring-diagrams.html were a big help. Unfortunately, I forgot who posted the link to these- I found it in another thread. The terminal mentioned is connected to the switched side of the starter relay, and to the wire that goes through the transmission switch to the starter solenoid. So the culprit in this is either the transmission switch or somewhere in that wiring section. I have no other symptoms of a PNP switch problem, so for the time being I will leave the jumper wire in place. Note- the wiring for the V70 is different from the 850 wiring diagram in the 850 manuals posted in this forum. This led me astray at first.
