Volvo Repair Database 96 850 Heated rear seats?

Post by double_platinum »

Just got done doing a bunch of work in the relay panel under the dash, and in the fuse box in my 850 Platinum edition sedan and wagon, and I keep seeing slots for the "rear heated seat" (fuse position "10" and relay position "R"). Did this ever make it to the North America cars? and if so, what elements of the seat are heated? Also does this only apply to sedans, because it would certainly be an issue with wiring on the wagons with the folding rear seats (like the ingenious rear hatch lighting and rear wiper wiring they did in the 240 wagons). Would love to see a pic of where the switch and wiring to the rear seat even goes, or of any retrofits someone may have done using front seat heater elements. I had this option on a Mercedes 560 SEL I once had, and it was a great addition to the minuscule amount of heat that creeps out under the front seats. Maybe this is only for Sweden, but it gets cold in the north ern states too! Any info/parts source etc. is much appreciated

Interesting. I've never heard of it, but 1990s Volvos were sometimes wired for options they didn't have out of the factory, like side marker lights for instance.

I'm subscribing to this thread, I'd like to hear if any Euro 850s had heated rear seats.

Also I just looked at the service manual online and in the segment "seats power.pdf" at the bottom of the pdf there is a whole diagram of the rear heated seat wiring...seems like each side had a switch, and both the backrest and the seat bottom had an element. More I find out on this the more I want them.

The only older Volvos with heated rear seats in the US were V70's custom ordered for Boston Coach in 1998 and 1999.
I have bought and sold two of these.
The seat heat switch was mounted in the rear of the center console under the 12v outlet, one switch, it heats the entire rear seat!
(Pretty neat option)!
FWI, all these wagons were ordered one way, All GLT's, with leather, heated seats (of course), NO moonroofs, foglights, trip computer, Euro rails and crossbars (for added luggage) after all these were limos/cabs. No wood trim on the console.
Both I had were very good wagons and were well cared for by by their 2nd owners. Both needed very little work by me for resale
Mod note. Jim passed away in early 2022, his contributions to this forum are immortal, and he is missed. RIP

I have read of people adding the rear seat heater but can't for the life of me recall where the write-up was...wasn't on our site...maybe the now defunct Brit site? Just don't remember.

If you take off the center console, you can see where the rear heated seat switch would be mounted. There would be only one (like Jim said).

Alright, anyone know if they're prewired?

So I ran out and looked at the relay panel under the dash, and since it is dark out I couldnt sort the wires enough to see what colors come from there, the "R" position relay is wired with 4 wires that I could see (could be more). the diagram for the 95 in the service manual under power seats.pdf shows the relay should have 7 wires leading to the relay. Anyhow, just thought I would throw that in there...I can look easier tomorrow when the sun is out.

Hey Lee, do you have a p/n for the relay as well, I want to see if it is a double width (like the alarm or interior light/central locking one) or just a single port relay

The relay is part number 3523201. The VADIS diagram is as clear as mud but the electrical diagrams call it out as relay 214 which is a single relay in the middle of the bottom row of the lower central electrical unit. I couldn't find a part number for the switch. VADIS only shows a blank panel for that switch position.

My bet is that a standard seat heater switch will work but the arrow won't point to the back.
