Volvo Repair Database Brake Pads that don't squeal

Post by tom39 »

I am looking for suggestion for new brake pads. I have tried 3 brands and the squeel goes away for a little while but comes back within 6k mi or so.
I don't know what the first brand was as they were on it when I bought the car. So I bought OEM Volvo they were the worst, I have Wagner Thermo Quiet pads on now and they did great for a year but about a month ago the rear started to squeel. At first only when I backed up and only the first time but now it is getting worse.

I am surprised that you had issues with the OEM pads. They are filthy dirty but they are normally quiet.

Is the noise from the front or the rear?

If it is the rears did you use the shims and grease them?

There are a couple of versions of the rear calipers. One version has a step built into the end of the piston and the other has a flat faced piston. On the step faced piston you can use a full shim, on the flat faced piston you should use a "trimmed" half shim.

I have also used a product called "Disc Brake Quiet" from Permatex when I didn't have any Sil Glyde brake grease and it has worked fine with the Mintex Red pads for over 2 years now.

i thought i was to avoid ceramic and go with semi-metal to avoid squeal.

Mine shriek like a banshee and I'm in dire need of replacement. Cant remember which they ar though.

Thanks everyone

Lee, the OEM pads that squeeled were on the rear. The shim was a full shim (square w/a hole in the center). So I'm guessing flat piston. Not sure of the brand of grease used but they were greased, I had the parts guy get some from the mechanics in the Volvo shop and put some in a coffe cup for me when I got the pads, the grease was white thats all I know.
I also put in a new pin kit with each new pad set.

I still have the old pads. They look brand new.

I'm thinking of cleaning and scuffing them and putting them back in. Your right though they are dirty.

I used a set of the Autozone ceramic (made by ....Morse I think) on the front of my Saab 9-5 with no squeal or squeak so far after about 5K miles. It took a bit to get them "seated" but after that I love them for braking and no dust.

Ok well here is the update. Took the wagner thermo quiet pads out and took them back to the auto parts. They gave me a replacment set, much to my suprise.
I put the new set in without the shims and coated the back of the pad with CRC - Disc Brake Quiet. I seems to make a gummy coating on the back of the pad. Don't know if it will work but gave it a try anyway.

OEM Volvo pads do not squeal if mated to OEm rotors.
If so, the install was incorrect
