Volvo Repair Database Hello! Also: Remote Keyless Entry?

Post by AnnaCB »

Hi folks,

I've just joined a couple of minutes ago. After pining for a Volvo since I was pretty young, I finally managed to acquire one just two days ago. I was almost sad to come home after work because it meant I'd have to stop driving!

It is a 1994 850 Turbo sedan- I'm not sure about the trim level, perhaps someone could advise me on how to tell?
It has a lot of optional bits and pieces (i.e. the heated seats, 6-disc cd changer in the trunk that may or may not be stock, sunroof, traction control, etc.) and I'm wondering how to tell if it once had remote keyless entry. Perhaps they all have it?

It only came with *one* key and a foggy history, so I think it might well have keyless entry that might not be in use. If it does and I just need the remote, could anyone recommend a place to find one where I won't be absolutely ruined pricewise? How about pointing me towards programming instructions if you could?

I'm definitely not trying to be lazy, but Volvos are new to me, and luxury options in general are DEFINITELY new to me. I'm 25, female (and thus, in my case, not raised to work on cars) and I've only ever owned Subarus (and one evil Civic) so I have a lot of learning to do.
I'm looking forward to extensive forum reading, and thanks in advance for anything you can offer :)

As optioned as your car sounds there is a very good chance that it originally came with a remote. The way to tell for sure is to remove the glove box and look directly to the right, along the A pillar to see if the receiver box is there.

The glove box comes out easily (If it actually still opens at all), the only real trick is releasing the arms that hold the door. Use a small screwdriver or something similar to release the arms through the holes next to the arm mounts.

The one pictured is actually upside down from the normal mounting. If you have such a receiver you need to jot down the part number and the FCC identifier so that you can get the correct remote. The numbers you need to look at are circled.

The eBay sellers all claim that their remotes work for all 850s from '93 to '97, they don't. You will need to get the one with the correct numbers for it to work.

If you have a receiver post back the part number and the FCC number and I will get you the correct part number and FCC number for the remote.

Thanks so much for your response!
Pictures really are worth a thousand words- it was a snap finding the info.

I have discovered that yes, my car does have remote entry.
IPD ( http://www.ipdusa.com/ ) is based in my town, so I have them working on getting the correct remote for me.

Volvos are awesome, I can't say that enough.
Apparently the people who worked on this car right before I bought it accidentally nicked my lower radiator hose, so it blew on me a few days ago. After getting the hose and thermostat, I found out just how easy it is to get to and replace little things in this car as opposed to the other cars I've had. The brake pads were a cinch, too.

Again, thanks for the quick response. I'm a happy girl.

You need the 5653T remote.

Her is a link to one currently on eBay.

Our base 850 didn't. I don't think any base 850s did. I added an aftermarket kit. Works great.
