P0455 Evaporative Emission Control System Leak Detected (gro

Post by mrreilly »

Hey all,
I've got about a month to get rid of this P0455 code. I have to get an echeck at the end of march :? And obviously I would not pass it with the the check engine light on.
Things to look for:
1.Gas Cap (have a new one, about a year old now)
2.Vacuum Elbows (just ordered from IPD)

What else can I look for??
I know this can be a tough problem to solve..

Thanks for any help!

Yup, the purge valve especially likes to fail when hot.

Thanks for the replies! Would this be a relatively easy thing for me to fix on my own? And could this possibly be the reason my fuel gauge fluctuates when below 6gal.?

Yes, the EVAP purge valve is a very simple fix. It's located right next to the cooling fan. Just unplug the connector and the 2 hoses, pull out the old one, and put the new one in. One hose goes to the intake manifold, and the other goes on back to the canister by the fuel tank. Make sure that line is good going all the way back, or you will still likely get a code if there are any cracks in the line.
And could this possibly be the reason my fuel gauge fluctuates when below 6gal
Mine does that too...I'll show 3 gallons and next time I start the car, the gas light is on. I think it's just the gas sloshing around in a big gas tank that does it. Every older car I've owned has done this to some extent.

Hmm, I guess we're talking about 2 different things. I'd start with the purge valve at the front of the car, replace that and check the line to the charcoal canister, and see if the code goes away. It's a cheaper part, and as VCA said, usually more likely to fail when hot. There is ALSO one one top of the charcoal canister at the back of the car, which is the part that you found.

Take a look at your car first before you order. This is for a 98, but apparently there are 2 types for that year (as with the timing belt tensioners) - a square and a round one. Mine has the square one, and it's a 98, so double-check.

Hey, I'd like to jump in on this thread before it goes cold. Maybe the problems are connected.
I have the P0455 code lit too. The car runs fine, but will only take fuel while it's running. If I try to fuel while car is off, I can only let it dribble in without it clicking off the safety on the nozzel. Also, when the cap is off, with car running, I can hear the fuel gurgling and bubbling inside the tank. Could that vent on top of the tank mentioned above be the culprit?

Hey JABLACKBURN Thanks for the responses on the racheting noise. Do you think anybody'd complain if I threw that question on the 2001 and Up forum?

Sounds like either the valve is stuck or the canister/line itself is clogged up. I don't know which it would be - you'd have to do some investigating yourself there.

Go for it. More people over there have AWD's and XC's anyway - they were fairly late models, so a lot of people here (like me!) don't know much about them - just put 'V70R noise' or something in your title - don't include the year there, and then explain your situation below. I won't move it
