1998 S90 Check Engine - Evaporative Control System

I have a 1998 S90 with about 60,000 miles and the check engine light came on. My local mechanic identified the code as the Evaporative Control System, but his computer is not sophisticated enough to trace out the details of the problem.
Any help from anyone on what might be causing this problem with the EVAC. SYSTEM? The car is coming up for registration and will not pass with a check engine problem!

As the Registered owner of this Volvo vehicle, your satisfaction with our product is very important to us. This letter is to inform you that Volvo is voluntarily initiating special Extended Warranty Program P45.

Under Extended Warranty Program P45, Volvo is extending the warranty of the engine management system software to 10 years or 120,000 miles whichever comes first, from the date your vehicle was originally placed into service for the condition describe below.

The extended warranty covers the following condition:

Your vehicle performs a test to determine if fuel tank vapors are escaping into the atmosphere. Under certain conditions, the test may falsely set Check Engine light and store one of the following diagnostic codes in your vehicles memory: ECM-400C, ECM-443, ECM-4308 or ECM PO44200.
