I have been smelling gas occasionally. No real pattern to identify but it does get strong. I got under the car and found a broken hose near the fuel filter. It looks like it used to connect to a thingamajig behind the fuel filter but I can iodentify what the thing is or what the function of the hose is. I suspect it part of the EVAP system but my Haynes has no real info in these 3 hoses that run together or what the valve thing might be.
I am certain I need to repair the hose and it appears to run to the top of the fuel tank. I would rather splice than drop the tank ..
What is the hose function?
Whats the thing behind the filter?
And what do you think is best means to an easy repair?

"... thingamajig behind the fuel filter..."
Sounds a lot like the fuel pressure regulator. My 1996 850, 1997 850, and 1998 S70 have a fuel pressure regulator behind the fuel filter underneath the car. There is a vacuum line that connects to the fuel pressure regulator and a fuel return line back to the tank.

The EVAP line would also be a suspect but it will throw a code every time. Do you have a CEL on and do you have the code number?

I agree, a photo of the damage would help. To make a guess, it could be one of the hoses that connect to the roll-over valve. I had to replace that hose when it was eaten through by a squirrel (or something with small teeth -- you could see the teeth marks in the rubber).

No Codes Lee. If you have the Haynes Manual for this car the photo of the fuel filter in Chapter 1 shows the thing to the right and above the filter (based upon the angle of the photo). The hose came from the right side of the "device"
I will try to get a picture tonight after jacking the car up....again. In the mean time I may stop by the dealer to look at their diagrams and figure if i can pick up some hose for what ever it is. I feel so helpless and stupid with this. Almost always I can find a picture or a diagram to help me understand what i am looking and and what it does but the available documentation SUCKS.
It could be a regulator or solenoid. I followed the three lines that run together from the engine area, down the underneath on the passenger side towards the back of the car. One, the fuel line, goes to the filter , the second goes to the "device" and leaves the back side and heads toward the fuel tank. It is the second line that is broken of the rearward side of this "device"
If it is the regulator what performance symptoms would I be noticing? What else might it be?

Dealer says rollover valve. They dont have two of the 3 hose segment/parts required to replace. Would standard hose work? Would this explain the fuel odor? I dont know how the rollover valve works and if fuel vapor would excape with the hose broken.

As I mentioned above, the rollover valve hoses on my car were eaten through by a squirrel last year. I replaced them with standard hose. The diameters of the damaged hose were different on both ends, so I had to wrap the roll over nipple with a turn of silicone fusion tape to thicken the diameter. Then the new hose was a tight fit on both sides. I held it down with tie-wrap / zip-ties on both ends.

I found the silicone fusion tape in the electrical department at Home Depot. It was a little expensive (~$10/roll) but I use it for jobs around the house. An alternative would be to use regular black PVC electrical tape.
