ABS Module Repair

Over the past month or so the ABS light, the Brake light and the CEL were coming on, and the shift arrow would flash in my '99 V70. When this would happen the speedometer and odometer would shut down as well. My code scanner showed code P0600 - a general communication error, P0722 and P1057 which appear to be related to speed sensor errors. I spent about 15 minutes researching the problem here on MVS and very quickly found that these symptoms result from a failing ABS module.

I read Ozark Lee's write up about repairing the module myself, and although the soldering part of it was not intimidating, I was concerned about hacking into the plastic cover of the module. (After all, Volvo's are not exactly known for their superior plastics

)

I pulled the module off the car and mailed to Matt (MattyMoo here on MVS) and he repaired my module. He was professional, prompt and communicative. Matt made the repairs the same day he received my module and mailed it back out the next day. Shipping took 2 days each direction. The module arrived clean and neatly sealed. I installed the module back on the car yesterday and it works like a charm. No more dash lights!

Just wanted to give Matt some props. Apparently this is a common problem but the solution is really simple. Matt can get you back on the road professionally, he is reasonably priced and he stands behind his work.

I just had mine done though Victor Rocha and have had similar success and experience. I have had it installed for one week and it works. Guess we should report back after a few years to see how it holds up!

I had Vic Rocha do mine ('97 855 GLT) in 2005 at ~70K and it's still going strong at 141K miles today.

I just bought a replacement ABS module from Matty Moo - the experience was 100% positive. The new module works fine. This is the kind of repair where it's worth it to pay the economical price to avoid the rebuild time and risk.

Agreed. If you aren't 100% sure of your skills sawing the top of the case off and resoldering the pins, send the module out for repair.

I did my own and can say that it isn't for everyone.

I'm not sure if the rebuilders do it but maybe try to get an advance exchange of the good part and send your old one after the fact. If you have big hands like me, you only want to do the removal and reinstallation in one sitting.

Agreed! I was told that my circuit board was broken.. so I know that i cannot repair that .. and for under 200 bucks including shipping is a good deal in my estimation.

Thanks for the positive feedback guys, I really appreciate that. People like the price and the fact that the module comes to you, so no need to drive without one there. When I started doing this, I quickly realized why I was one of the few doing it this way, but the rare headaches are worth it. MVS people have been great to deal with too, I haven't had to remind a single MVS member to send one back. We have a good crowd here.

Who told you that? I've seen one burned up, but never broken. The units themselves are incredibly sturdy, with the exception of the pins.

The ABS module circuit board is made from several layers of glass fibre bonded together with a high quality resin, - like the hull of a boat, just with a higher strength and of a better quality. Breaking a circuit board will take a major traffic accident or a hammer and you may not succeed breaking it with the first blow.
However, de-lamination can occur if the circuit board has been exposed to excessive temperature for a prolonged time. Still the boards have to withstand +300°C for at least 10sec during soldering.

I've pulled the ABS module on my wife's 99 V70, per one of the posts on this forum, a Volvo 96 850 I think. Obviously, mine looks different than the one shown on the other post but I can't seem to locate what parts of the board need to be re-soddered. I'm assuming like the other diagrams that the area to be fixed is the right side of this module, As pictured in this post it would be the bottom area from left to right. I dont' see any area's that need redone but If I can get confirmation as to where to repair this ABS module that would be appreciated as my wife needs this fixed. thanks,
