Cut Open an Oil Trap

'because Enquiring Minds Want to Know"...this is the oil trap trap I just replaced on my 97 850R. My ex-girlfriend bought this car 9 years ago, put another 65,000 miles on it, and no one ever suggested she have the oil trap changed. The car now has 164,000 miles, and I have owned it for about four months, and have done the timing belt/water pump, trunk struts, and decided that ignorance was not bliss, so in I went...
get your popcorn, kiddies, its time for "Journey to the Center of the Oil Trap!" ...
Not very dramatic, and not "gunky" (nor were all the hoses, although "crumbly" perhaps this just shows a Mobil One motor (at least for the past 65,000 miles). That "stuff is rather like carbon (probably is) than oil.

Did it have any oil in it (that looks pretty good to me)?

Was the dipstick smoking?

How clean was the intake on the head (here is a picture of mine)?
